6 cyl identification
I just got my "new" '69 F-100 LWB Ranger home. It runs and drives good with "factory" A/C and bed side tool storage. It's Lunar Green and Wimbleton White. The bed is not dented at all.
It came from factory with a 240-6 C-4. The engine was changed out for a reman several years ago. I was told it was a 300. How would I identify the engine as being a 240 or 300? |
Seems it's the same block, so might be hard to determine?

All are "hang-on" units, bezels bolt to the bottom of the dash. Factory installed integral A/C is combined with the heater. The A/C controls are located in the same panel as the heater controls. There are two glove boxes. The liner in the dash glove box is shorter, because the A/C's expansion valve is mounted behind it. There is another glove box located within the A/C's bezel. |
Not definitive, but you could check the block casting code to see what it is, as ND said, the last year for the 240 was 74. So a code of D5 and higher would be a 300 block, but could still have a 240 crank from the rebuilder. The dowl or pencil stroke test would still have to be done.

Hmmmmm..... I will try to find castings and maybe I can tell. It's not a big deal I was just curious to know. Most parts interchange between the two....right?
Both were great engines. The warranty for the reman was in the glove box but it didn't say engine size. It has under dash air that follows the contour of the lower dash... Dealer installed I assume. |
like Mr. Wilson sez, measure the stroke. ;)
