Towing a travel trailer?
 

I don't have the owners manual, but i was told to tow in 4th gear? My travel trailer is a 5000lb airstream tandem axle, bumper pull. My truck is a 1996 F350 4x4 7.3 with a standard transmission with OD. Just bought this truck, so i dont know much about it, other than it is stock, and has always been. Thanks for any help.

Or am i fine just working the gears? and not letting it get in a strain?

That is well below your gvw.i would drive normal with 5th. Some gauges would also help so as to monitor egt specifacly.you should be just fine either way

Yeah, if you got an EGT gauge, go from that.

But you should have no issues towing in 5th.

With it being an airstream, you can probably do 80 down the highway if you wanted.

Thanks guys! I am thinking about putting in some gauges, and maybe a mild towing chip. I dont want a hot rod, just a little more power, and maybe a little better fuel mileage. I love this truck, ive been looking for one for a while, finally found one. It only has 190,000 on it. Runs great! Thanks again.

The airstreams are ... well just that airstreams.
They are designed to tow easy.

So you'll have no issues with a stock truck.

Juts of course listen to your truck if you bog down on big hills, downshift. yada yada. =)

You didn't say what your rear gears are, most likely 410's, go to 4th if climbing a hill and rpm's start to drop. Get the EGT you really need it.

Well, they all covered it, nothing else to say except use common sense. Good luck. I have an auto and was told to never tow in OD. I say BS, if you are on the flats, tail wind or down hill, let her rip!

That no tow in OD is so dumb.im not sure who started that but it is malarky. I don't care just so it is not going in and out repeadedly building heat is the important point here.at least that is how i see it.

Well Aaron, it takes big money, man i hate the idea of shelling out 5K next week for the trans and then another couple K on a turbo to keep EGT's down. Oh well, what can you expect when you pull your house down the road, LOL! I've had this same 5er now six years now and when I'm inside in my recliner, laptop on my lap, dishnetwork on, the washer and dryer going, wife's in the shower, dinner on the stove, I have to remind myself, MY PSD PULLED THIS HALF WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY, COOL!!!!

I was on my way back from lunck today and was crossing 66 when a ford SD c. ome by hauling this GIGANTIC 5er TOY HAULER! (3axles)...i dont know what that thing weighs but our toy hauler was 7K empty...All I could think of was...that dude got NOTHING on Glenn hahahahaha maybe someday ill hook a trailer to mine.I feel like such a looser.maybe ill go get my tractor and pull it around for grins...Its is only 6 300 and 4k tra iler.small potatoes but its all i got
