Leaking fuel at throttle on injection pump

My 7.3 is leaking fuel on the side of the throttle body, on the side of the injection pump.

Here's a pic of it, with the cover off.

My question is, can "I" take the cover off without removing the pump,
and replace the seal or whatever need's replacing to stop this leak...
has anyone done this or is a new pump in order....
I really don't want to do a new pump, just got this truck and not to sure if the engine will last, it's running fine now, but would like to stop this leak without spending to much cash until I get to know how she runs and handles.

I haven't opened this up yet, just got a pic of it off the net.
Thanks for any help or info.

You can do it on the truck, but it will be a lot easier on a workbench. If you remove your pump, mark the position of it on the gear case so you can re-install it with the same timing.

To get at the thottle shaft orings it will take some disassembly of the governor springs and linkage. I have a website with the Navistar pump overhaul manual uploaded on it, on there you can see what it will take to replace the shaft orings.

I wouldn't hesitate to attempt the oring replacement, I took my pump apart and replaced the drive shaft seals which was a lot more involved than the throttle shaft orings. If you take your time, pay attention, keep things clean and mark the settings so that you can put them back you will be ok. Good luck

Thank you very much, DC....:-X22
Just what i wanted to hear. I'll take a look at your page, hope those shaft seals aren't to hard to come by.:-drink

Not sure about just those orings by theirself, I have only bought them in a pump seal kit off ebay.

DC, is this the kit I'd need....

This is the one I have used. Seems like a lot for just a couple little orings, but ya want to make sure you get the right ones I suppose.

everything in your IP needs to be PERFECTLY CLEAN! if you have a place you can work at that level, sounds like it won't be too bad. but in the wind under a pine tree, i wouldn't try it.

Ok, thats the one I'll order, thats a small price to pay, compared to a full rebuild, ....
Josh, I'll give this a shot, I realize these parts are "dirt" sensitive,
I've worked on "gas" carb's before, but these are a different breed.

Thanks again, DC, (reps given) I'll be sure to post back here, when I'm done.
It may take some time as winter is coming on over here in our parts,
and this truck isn't my daily driver, yet....:-drink
I'm new to these diesel engines, but learn quickly, the only thing that scared me on these "IDI's , was the IP, looks like I have to face my fears now...:(
To have these IP's repaired over here at a garage is close to $1000.:-arrgh
An you have to find one that knows what he's doing.;)

X2 on what Josh said above and I said in my first post. You HAVE to keep it clean. The internals of the pump will not tolerate any dirt, trash, germs, diseases.....etc... I'm sure you get the picture.

That said, did you read on my site where I did the drive shaft seals? To get the throttle shaft out your going to have to remove the face cam and the guide stud in the mini-max governor assembly just as I did. Note how I marked them in my disassembly. If ya do that, you can put them back exactly where they were and you should be fine.

Those are the only 2 settings that I believe you will be messing with.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. It sounds like you have mechanical abilities, so if you take your time everything will turn out ok. :-X22
