what mpg should I expect from my 2000 7.3 4x4 Excursion
 

I am trying to determine why my mpg seem lower than when I bought the 2000 4x4 Excursion new, everything is still stock and I have 180,000 miles on it. Currently i am getting 12-14mpg locally and it doesn't seem to get much better on the highway. A few years back i called the Ford dealer and they tried to tell me the sudden drop-off was due to fuel changing in the winter. I am getting older, but I could swear that I was getting between 18-20 on the highway while cruising at 70mph back then on the long hauls. Just came of back from a 2000 mile trip and don't think i broke 16 while driving 95% highway miles.

What are you guys expecting from your similar set-ups? Am I just losing it in my age?

I am getting between 14-16 around town and a steady 18 on the highway. Have not taken Ex on a LONG trip to experience a full tank of fuel mileage.

But drive the Ex 500-600 miles a week.

Do a search in the 7.3L forum. There are maintenance items you can do to your rig to ensure the best MPG.

most problems on the 7.3 is the exhaust backpressure tube gets clogged up or the sensor is clogged. A simply cleaning of the sensor and tube will help with power and MPG. The second problem is the stock fuel tank pick up line, the stock setup uses this weird feed return setup that mixs the two so your feed is sucking air bubbles from the return and it makes the motor loose power

12-14 Around town 18 highway. then I Got this:
Riffraff Diesel: RDP 6637 Filter Kit

Now 14-16 around town and I got 22 highway two weekends ago on a 5 hour trip. Boo Yaa

Not to be a downer, but I promise a 6637 didnt give you 22mpg.

To the OP: Have you changed anything on your truck? Tires? Springs? Anything? Is your speedometer/odometer known to be accurate, and has it always been? I noticed mine was reading about 3% slow, and corrected it with AE and a GPS. My "mileage" immediately jumped. Of course, it really didn't change, at all, I was just measuring it more accurately.

For what it's worth, I get 13-14 around town, and 16-17 on the highway.

But be careful! I just cleaned mine and I believe I may have damaged the sensor since I have been getting a drop in MPG's since the cleaning!

Out of all the mods I have done the best increase in MPG is to run "Off Road" diesel. It makes a HUGE increase.

The Lie-o-Meter strikes again! My ex, all stock gets 18-19 highway. I Dont have a heavy foot and I like to keep the rpms at or under 2000. Hand calculated I avg 18.5 highway. City 14.5

Yeah its probably not accurate but before the I installed I never according to the Lie-O-meter got better then 17 so even if it is off I'm still getting better milage. thats what I was trying to say.
