17.6 mpg in a '59 F350

This was on the interstate running a true average of 60 mph. A stretch with a lot of hills. About a thousand lbs in the bed. 210 cu in cummins 6 cyl turbo diesel putting out 120 hp with gm 4 spd manual SM 465 trans and a sterling/ford 10 1/4 rear axle from a '92 F350 with 4:11 ratio. First road trip with my creation. Of course I'd be out rollin' in this rig even if it got 10 mpg. Just sayin.........

Thats excellent Gary!
I don't dare guess what I'll end-up getting with the 4.6 and OD but anything over 10 and we will be setting new average records for Teddy.

Not trying to bug you Gary. Just wondering how things on the other side of the hills are going?

I read a lot of your build but I don't remember what your engine came out of and I'm not familiar at all with a small cummins 6.
My buddy got his 39 International running a few months ago with a 4BT and a ZF tranny, 3.73 gear, 31x10.50 tires, he gets 25-27mpg and drives it like somethings after him. That engine is also around 120 hp stock but he had a new pump with some tweaks. It seems like yours should do better.

It's a cummins 6at from a UPS truck. I sort of agree, it could or should do better. This truck IS pretty heavy though. I think I was doing about 65 mph for a lot of it . Here's some specs 210 cu in. 120 hp , about 750-800 lbs. You can see it in my youtube posting 59 f350 with cummins 6at. It sounds about as loud and rattly as a cummins 12 valve in a dodge. Maybe a 39 cornbinder is more aerodynamic than a fridge. Duh, what isn't? Then there's the exaggeration factor with the '39 guy. :-X0A6 My internet is down at my place and maybe it won't be fixed til Tuesday with the holiday.... I'm at the library checking email and I feel like a homeless nerd if there is such a thing.

I am cracking up thinking about you sitting there typing about your Fridge with all those folks sitting around near by reading the newpapers on a stick!:-X04:-X04

Your truck wouldn't be so heavy without those groovy hooks you put on the front bumper!:D

thundersnow70 08-31-2012 10:41 PM

you guys are cracking me up! 17 mpg? 32 mpg? i would dance on a table if my 292 would get 10 mpg! you know what they say "if you have to ask how much..............you cant afford it! i fill up my fridge, check the oil and drive. tailgate a smartcar when i can find them and wave at all the guys driving hybreds. everybody looks at my fridge...........you cant NOT look. you cant put a price on that and mpg is way down the list. but hey GB, im glad your getting 17! now go get in that truck and scare someone. better yet, go to a big truck stop and see if you can get someone to tell you that your at the wrong pump!
