Crazy.........
I usually get emails from FTE when someone posts to a Thread that I am Subscribed to. I have received zero emails today. I have not been able to access FTE all day. I can access any other web site...... I may have found the problem...... Your answers are a big help.....Thank You ! |
Just talked with Dak on the phone........

Long day.
A couple weeks back I noticed my GF's Mini Cooper (BTW, don't buy one of these) was leaking coolant. Further inspections from the pressure test showed a leaking water pump and thermostat housing. Quote for repair is 300 dollars in parts and 900 in labor! I opened my big fat mouth and said we could save a lot of money if we do it ourselves. That's been my Friday night and all day Saturday. The water pump requires the entire passenger side of the engine bay to be removed as well as the motor mount. Get the parts at Carquest and find that the water pump provided is incorrect and won't fit in the space available in the engine bay. I get to drive to the Mini dealer and pay 180 bucks for a Mini water pump that goes on fine. While I'm there I replaced the serpentine belt (10 dollar part, 500 in labor to replace by itself). I tackle the thermostat next...which is a housing not just the thermostat. That took about 4 hours to take apart the driver's side of the engine. The car is how cooling from its test run. We will see how much it sucks down tonight. So far no more leaks! |
Wow Steve........What are you going to do the next time.........??
|
I plan to drive the car to Carmax and put her in something I can tolerate. Plastic water pump and plastic thermostat housing. 45k miles and all of this went bad.
That is not okay in my book. |
Don't feel so bad. I got to do head gaskets on the wife's jeep last weekend. Chrysler's 4.7 V8 uses three chains to drive two camshafts, requiring front timing cover removal in addition to the heads. And of course the offending head was junk....:-X15
