NYS Inspections- brake specifications
 

Hi all,

my 02 Expy is up for inspection. I'm looking to educate myself a bit on what the EXACT specifications are for what determines whether pads/rotors will fail.

the only documentation I can find on the NY DMV site so far has many bullet points about what is checked with the brakes, but it does not mention any specifics on what pad thickness must be, and what rotor thickness must be, only general statement that the "condition" is checked. Most importantly, there's nothing about rust on rotors. The rust I'm talking about is what goes about the outer perimeter of the rotor, and also extends onto the braking surface by a few mm. I've had inspection guys in the recent past tell me that this "rust band" is too large, so my vehicle would be failed because it reduces the surface at which the pad is making contact with the rotor when applying the brakes. I've honestly never heard of this theory until that past couple of years, and I've been a vehicle owner/diy maintainer for the past 25.

Anybody know this information for NY? The best for me would be some official pamphlet I could print out, with all of these exact specifications, and then maybe crack it open when I'm having the guy at the shop show me my brakes and why he has to fail me(and sell me new brakes, since nothing else ever seems to be wrong) when the pads are thick and I have maybe 2-3 mm of rust coming down onto braking surface from the outer edge, which to me looks totally normal. Seems like a bit of a shakedown to me, so I want the hard facts.

NYS DMV - Information for Dealers, Repair Shops, and Inspection Stations
Basically the pads have to be down to the steel for rejection. Bonded linings less than 1/16" of pad, riveted 1/32" pad to rivet. Rotor- distortion or scoring which impairs the braking system.
The DMV site does list all the requirements for insp. but is a little difficult to find. Booklet C79 over 80 pages then amendments after that.

That's great info, thank you.

I have never seen a disc brake set-up where the pad wears on the rotor all the way to the edge. There is always a lip of some depth unless the rotors are new or freshly turned.

old thread but just venting....let's not forget the biggest BS, the parking/e-brake!
gotta have that (which I don't anymore)...inspection is up in January.
