door speaker size?? 86 f150

Bought 5x7s for it. Somehow i thought they were right size. They are round speakers in the door. My explorer has 6x8/5x7s. Now they are stockers in the door so does anyone know are they 5 1/4s or 6 1/2s?

Dave804 07-24-2012 06:56 PM

6.5 I believe. I 1) read that somewhere and 2) have that size in mine. I've seen elliptical speakers in most Fords this age that aren't trucks. I think it made it easier to stick in "premium" audio with cone mounted mids and tweeters.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave.

I thought it was ~5.5" from the factory but some people have reported getting 6.5" speakers to fit. Or so I seem to remember.

5 1/4" I just bought some from the dreaded Walmart and put them in a few weeks ago. I had some 6X9's laying around, but they would not fit without lots of modifications.

JayzDaddy 07-24-2012 11:23 PM

Im gonna trade my 5x7s back to walmart for 6.5s. See if they fit. Everything i have saw so far on the net lead to the theory they have the same size bracket. Ill report in tomorrow with the results.

Now how do the wiper arms come off so i can paint them back black n primer the hood n cowl.

JayzDaddy - a word of friendly advice and a plea for your help - please don't use Text-ese shorthand writing, OK? It is confusing and hard to read, and there is no need to try and fit a large comment in a small amount of space, you have plenty of room to type. You're not texting your BFF and many guys here have children older than these trucks and are simply going to ignore you if you continue writing like that.

OK? Please. :)

At the base [where the wiper mounts to the splined shafts], there is a small ring with a tab. Lightly lift the wiper arm away from the windshield [to release pressure] and pull the tab outwards, using your finger nail or small screw driver. Then allow the wiper arm to rest on the exposed ring. The arm will now come off with gentle yet firm pulling. It goes on just the opposite.

Thanks. I appreciate it.

Sorry. I sometimes do that as 98% of the time i use my phone to check the sites.

Dave804 07-25-2012 12:32 PM

I'm right there with you Jayz. Luckily I oft use my phone for email so it corrects my grammar as I go. Little trick I started using too- Every few sentences or thought I insert a couple spaces. Makes it easier for my to type in that tiny tap talk box, and breaks it up for the reader.

RE stock size: I believe you guys saying 5.25 are correct. My truck had OE speakers 6.5" in the door. But they were likely swapped and I just didn't consider that. I'm going to the JY today, where I usually see a lot of trucks with 6.5". I'll attempt to see if there's cutting involved, or if some 6.5's fit in the factory hole.

Please nobody be offended here, but I shall mimic a NumberDummy reply here. :)

Huh? :-huh

Yeah, electronic devices can help, phones used something called a T9 dictionary to help with composing SMS messages before the "smartphones" came out. I'd guess they still use that technology, or a variation of it.

But electronics can't read your mind, all they can do is make a nest-effort guess at what you're wanting to say.

It is still up to the author to proofread his composition. ;)

Thanks for your efforts, though! Making things easy to read for the audience increases the chances of getting help. :)

Hah, let me try to print a retraction.

I separate my questions, diagnostic steps, thoughts, etc etc, by paragraphs. Much easier to deal with than the block of text. Most of the time when I'm online I'm so tired that I'll simply not read a large mass of typing.

Thank you!

Some people just aren't aware how hard it can be to read a wall of text on a computer screen, white space helps alleviate that.

6.5's fit our doors just fine and require no cutting. I have installed them in many 80-96 trucks.

It is 5x5. 1971-1996 uses the same diameter for the doors. (Yes 1971 and 1972 F-series had a stereo option with speaker grills below the door panels. Very easily kicked in by the driver or passenger)

5x5 is the measurment of the speaker itself. The metal of the factory speaker is wider around the speaker to compensate for the larger hole in the doors. Why some people can fit 6x5s depending on the manufacturer of the speaker.

5x7 is used as rear speakers 1978-1996 Bronco, and 1992-1996 F-series. Some people are able to instal 6x9s the same way.

----------------------

Off topic slightly...

Someday I might post in the what I did to my truck section on how I used the stereo wiring harness from a 1980-1986 bronco, a couple of 5x7 speakers and brackets from a 1993 crown victoria to install rear speakers in my truck. :)
