Aux Trans Cooler
 
K, So I'm looking around for an upgrade for my aux trans cooler, there are sooo many! I notice someone posted this - http://www.dieselsite.com/specialord...ioncooler.aspx

I know my e40d needs to stay cool but I dont know what the hell im looking for.

What I do know I'm looking for is I want to install a trans temp gauge. I put a pyrometer in my truck already I'm guessing it cant be too far off from that.

Guess I need to know where to install the probe and so on and so forth.

Help me keep this old E40D alive.

I went with the Hayden 679. IIRC it's rated for class "A" motorhome pulling 10,000 lbs, or total of 30,000 lbs. My normal driving temps have dropped from 190 to 160 in this 90+ heat we've been having. I think I will need to cover the cooler this winter. Put the temp probe in the test port on drivers side of trans, above the pan.

i just installed the tru-cool max from dieselsite.com. i am very happy with it so far. nice unit.

the tru-cool max that i got is rated for 40,000lb gvw & 45,000 btu's.

shipping was fast from diesel site and they had the best price even after shipping.

Its just so large are you sure ill have enough room to tag it on my rad with no probs?

drivers side of trans.remove test port plug,and screw in temp sensor.

drive and use truck normally watching temps.
150 here is minimum op temp. 175 here is PERFECT temp.200 here is still very safe temp (just requires sooner flushes,if you see 200 or slightly higher at the pan a lot.)
since it's about the hottest time of the year right now,you'll be seeing your highest temps.
this will help aid you in the size cooler you'll require for your truck.
you'll soon see,when speed of 35mph are reached and the converter locks up,these trans run pretty cool.if you drive alot in high heat/plowing/off road,you'll probably want a massive cooler,and an aux oil t-stat.
trans - water cooler (trans section of radiator) - air cooler (aux cooler) - return to trans.
some people bypass the rad's water cooler and just run an air cooler.this is outright crazy imho,cus if you get stuck in traffic,do a lot of off road (shoot just a little for that matter) or for some other reason can't move the truck down the road to air into your aux cooler,you can cook the trans fast!!!!
don't do it is my suggestion lol.:D

cooler isn't always better.you want some heat.
i was just talking to the peeps over at racerx,and i was explaining my temps,they thought very good of 180-190 at the pan,because they claimed it's good to help avoid condensation in the ATF.
a major issue i have with my dump bed hoist.im thinking of changing to hydraulic fluid,cus the ATF just keeps getting too dang milky since it's not anything that can heat up the fluid enough.......or at all really.i think using it back there is bad choice.
so some more to think about.people often needlessly over cool.it's another common area where people think if a little is good,then a lot must be better.

even though the cooler is pretty big i did not have any room issues when mounting mine.

you'd be surprised how hot the fluid will get even in winter.the radiator cooler will do it job and keep the fluid warmed in the winter. keep the radiator cooler in the loop and put install that "big" cooler you got for it and you'll be good to go. i've at least a dozen trans cooler upgrades. the last one i did on my 94 idit, the cooler was so big i didn't have time to modify the center brace and had to flip the cooler up& down, it's huge!LOL good luck
