Horn Button and relay
 

I have gotten the lights and other wiring hooked back up, but have a question. From the laminated wiring diagram I bought, it seems the horn button is used to create a ground instead of power. I will be getting a relay at napa after work, but right now when I clip my test light to the positive battery terminal and stick the point into the white wire coming through the firewall (and I'm pretty sure is the horn wire), I get a light. I mean the white wire is already a ground, and so when I get the relay and wire it up I'm thinking the horn will sound continuously. Maybe something with the relay prevents this, or maybe my horn button is stuck in the 'horn honk' mode......

Gary, I think you should have a wire coming all the way down the center of your steering shaft through your steering gear box, that is grounded when you press the horn button. That wire coming out of your gear box goes to the relay, the power for the relay comes from the hot side of your starter relay (old system) third wire from horn relay goes to horn/s.
Maybe yours is deferent?

No, actually I think I'm the one that's mixed up. I remember seeing that wire, so I'll chase it down. Thanks, maybe I'll get it hooked up tonight after all. Actually there are 2 horns with a yellow crossover wire between them. Not sure if that was the factory deal.

Hey, i might have chopped up and butchered the frame and axles and the floor, oh yeah and the dash and the seat and the front clip, and the driveshaft :o...., but I never messed with the horn wiring. So I tested the horns after work and neither one worked. I had to take the covers off, and clean the points and readjust the nut, and now they blow like crazy. I painted them and mounted them with separate ground wires. Then I jumpered them together and hot wired them to the battery and got that 50's sound of really loud dual horns. Maybe tomorrow I'll make it to town for a relay, then I can wire them up for good. If I can't find the horn button wire in the loom, I'll just tap into it were it emerges from the steering box. I'm afraid I've done a lot of that......Wouldn't it be good to put an inline fuse in the horn circuit, since it feeds right off the battery?

Turns out the white wire was my right front blinker.....I tapped into the horn button wire right outa the steering box and cleaned the contacts under the horn button. Now the horn button makes my tester beep, so I know when I get a relay, it should work. I pity the next guy that has to chase this wiring }>.

I spent all day yesterday trying to rebuild my dash wiring, and I'm the goofball that has hacked, spliced, added, changed this wiring over the last 40+ years.
I think its right:-huh now just have to stuff it in there and tie into the rest of the nest:-X21 I'm adding a tilt wheel column (Ford) with a 4way hazard switch in it, so we will see how it goes when its powered up:eek:

But my friends always said I was 'well grounded'. Not sure if that makes it better or worse........
