Fuel Filter and Fuel Pressure Regulator
Couple questions about these things. I am going to be rebuilding a spare fuel bowl with a dieselorings kit; it occurs to me that this would be a good time to change out the fuel filter. The archives seem to be a little confused on this point - which filter is best, and is the Motorcraft still acceptable?
Also, is the fuel pressure regulator mounted to the bowl the same for 94.5-97 and only the stuff connected to the FPR is different, or is the FPR itself different? |
The Motorcraft filter (it is actually made by Racor) is a good one. In fact Riffraff Diesel is running a special right now where you buy two filters (cheaper than I have found them for the OEM filter) and you get a free coffee mug! There isn't an offer code or anything, but it is in their flier this month. The deal is supposed to be good through the end of the month.

Mainly the location of some sensors. You may have to wrangle the wiring harness around to make everything reach, but either one will swap in there and work just fine. Now I need to go get another cup of 'jo. |
94-95 is diff from 96-97 on the FPR.

I plan on doing the fuel bowl overhaul this weekend, so there's not really time for me to order from Riffraff (sadly) and get it in time (without paying an exorbitant amount of money to a shipping outfit.)
My truck has over 312,000 miles - should I consider just replacing the fuel pressure regulator outright, or are they rebuildable? I have the o-rings and hoses from dieselorings - is there anything else I should consider replacing at this age and mileage on the fuel bowl while I have it out? |

They dont really go bad. Shimming them is a very effective way of adjusting, or you can stretch the spring a bit to adjust the fuel pressure as well. Buying a new spring will not essentially give you the correct fuel pressure out of the box. |
Shim it or build the adjustable type FPR. Here is the write-up went for the adjustable shim, and for the standard BB trick.
