351 windsor swap, could use some good help!
Hello everyone, I have a 1978 f150 with the i6 300 that I'm going to swap a 351w into. I'm staying carbureted so no need for electronic fuel pump but I need to know some basics. My trans is a np435 with mechanical clutch linkage and I need to know how or what to use to as a pivot point because the 300 uses the engine block. I know the bell housing is the same and will mate up fine but what are the best motor perches to use and where or what can I get them from? I have been searching and can't find the exact info I need, I really just need the clutch pivot and motor perch tower questions answered. Thanks everyone!

2wd or 4wd?
|
I don't have a W block here now but don't they have a tapped hole in them for the ball ?
|
It's a 4wd. Yea I believe there is some bracket that bolts using the bell housing bolts and wraps around to the side. I wonder if this is a custom fab part or I can find it on another model?

I have a Windsor in a 4wd 150.
Yes there is a tapped hole in the block, but it doesn't line up with bracket on the frame. The hole is too forward. You need a bracket from a 302 2wd manual. Took me a whole afternoon in the JY but they do exist. I think you can look at vans too column 3 speeds. As for the towers, I modified mine from a 351M. they are not the same and a lot of people will tell you they are. I'll get back when I'm not at work to show how I modified them. If you want headers, that's an issue too. Manifolds should be no problem. |
Yeah I have a set of headers already so I'll we what happens. I did just fine a clutch bracket on eBay for 302/351w swaps so that is set. Whenever your free let me know how you modified the towers. Thanks for the reply

I swapped a 351W in place of a 302. Used same perches, mounts, etc.

Was it a 2wd or 4wd? True a 302 and a 351W towers would be the same. Same motor mount too. But the 302, while in the 73-79 2wd, was never offered in the 4wd. And so the towers are different. I'm not sure, was the 302 offered in a 4wd 67-72 bumpside. If so, I wonder if the towers would fit in 73-79 frame rails. |
You will need a 351 flywheel too.
|
I know I do. Im debating getting my 300 flywheel weighted because Im having some trouble finding a replacement. I have not been to the jy but online I was only able to locate a 157 tooth and not the 164. I believe mine is a 164 but can't remember and I'm out of state on vacation for the up coming week.

I put a 351W in my '78 F100...it is a 2WD. Used my 351M/400 perches (if I remember correctly). Purchased 302 Mounts from the Parts house. I pulled my W out of an Econoline Van, so depending on where you got your W from you may need a different oil pan...mine worked perfect...I love my W...beefed it up a little with new Edelbrock Aluminum Intake, Edelbrock 4bbl Carb, Performance Cam, New Plugs, Wires, and so on...mine sits in front of a C6 transmission, haven't had any issues with it...When I did my swap, there wasn't much information out there on it...I know there are other guys that have W in their Dents, but for some reason they don't chime in...good luck with the swap...

Had another thought on a small issue I encountered; it may have been because of the C6 (not sure where or how the transmission dip stick is located on the np435), and that it came out of a van...It would have been an issue, if I wasn't going to replace it anyway, but the transmission dip stick didn't have much clearance, but as I said, I had already decided to upgrade it, so it wasn't a big deal.

Here's the clutch linkage pivot bracket that bolts to the bellhousing.

Thanks everyone for the awesome information. I got a new flywheel and found the clutch pivot bracket so I'm almost ready to do the swap. Last two things I need are a radiator and motor perches and I believe I'll have everything. As fOr the trans dipstick, I don't have one on that old np, it just has a fill hole I can keep an monitor the fluid with.
