New Guy Trans Question
Hey Gang,
I am the proud new owner of a short bed styleside 1960 f100 with a fresh 223 and a column shift 3 speed. I haven't owned a vintage truck before and I had a question to put out to the forum. My trans intermittently grinds when I put it in first after a stop. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to whether it grinds or not. I adjusted the clutch to both extremes of it's range and found no change to the grinding, I adjusted the clutch to the recommended amount of play. Is this experience normal, am I just being paranoid. Thanks in advance. 'Belle |
Welcome to FTE!
Your transmission, if original, does not have a synchromesh first gear. It will always grind going into first. Try putting it in 2nd or 3rd before you try first. That will stop all rotation in the trans and make 1st easier to engage. |
1963 was the first year for the Ford type 3.03 3 speed all syncromesh transmission.
1953/62 F100's have a "crash" first gear. |
Thanks for the info. I am sure you folks are going to be a huge help.
