CODE: P0677 Glow Plug problem
 

I am getting code P0677 and all I can tell is that indicated a bad plug on cylinder #7. Is this correct, and are they hard to change.

From what I have seen from other people with this code is they have other codes along with it. I only have the one. Truck runs good and still starts fine. It may have a bit longer start then normal, but can't tell for sure.

Removal

If servicing the RH glow plugs, remove the evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to Section 412-02 .
NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.

Disconnect the glow plug electrical connector.

Remove the glow plug buss bar.

Remove the glow plug.

NOTE: To install new glow plug sleeves, the cylinder heads must be removed from the vehicle.

If required, remove the cylinder heads from the engine. For additional information, refer to Section 303-01D .
NOTE: The glow plug sleeve is made of stainless steel. Lubrication of the glow plug sleeve removal tap is necessary, or damage to the tap and excessive force will be needed to get the tap started.

Thread the glow plug sleeve removal tap into the glow plug sleeve.

Install the glow plug sleeve removal tool into the threaded sleeve and tighten. Use a wrench to thread the tool into the sleeve until the sleeve is extracted.

Clean the glow plug bore with a stiff wire brush. Use filtered compressed air to remove the debris from the glow plug recess.

Installation

Verify the glow plug bore is completely clean and dry.
Apply Threadlock 262 sealant to the glow plug sleeve in two places.

Install the glow plug sleeve into the glow plug bore until it bottoms.

Clean the glow plug sleeve after installation with a nylon brush and solvent. Make sure Threadlock 262 sealant is cleaned out before it hardens.
Install the cylinder heads. For additional information, refer to Section 303-01D .
Install the glow plug.

Inspect and install new the O-rings as necessary.

Install the glow plug buss bar.

Connect the glow plug electrical connector.

If removed, install the evaporator core housing. For additional information, Section 412-02 .

Thanks for the info. That is good and detailed. But to honest it sounds like a pain. Is it easy. I am very michanicly enclined and do all my own work when I can on my truck. When you start talking about head removal, I would assume this is worst case? i was thinking it would be simply unscrew the old one and put in the new one. Am I way wrong. I was told that in general it was like putting in a new spark plug.

Glow plug is easy, removing the connector is the PITA.

I am sure that you don't need to replace the cups (sleeves).

I just did this job this weekend on my 2007. I was getting the same code for #2 and #5. I thought it was the harness and bought and replaced both RH - Passenger Side and LH - Driver Side harnesses. I bought the glow plug harness removal tool on e-bay, and it helped to unseat the harness connectors from the glow plugs, I was very careful and still broke two of the connectors, one on each side. It turned out to be the glow plugs themselves which are only about $15each from the dealer. IF the 2006 is the same as the 2007, it isn't that bad, expecially the #7 cylinder which is the closest one to the firewall on the passenger side. I used a 10mm deep socket and the glow plug unscrews and ease the new one in and tighten it up. Install the glow pplug harness connectors in place and you should be goodd as new. On the 2007, you have to take the inside fender well splash guard out to access the glow plugs. This isn't as bad as it sounds, my truck is lifted 8", so it made it really easy. Good luck and take your time and you can avoid a trip to the shop.
