New to the family - 59 F100 4x4
 

After about nine months of searching for something interesting for a project and came across this truck. VIN and a picture of the tag is below which I hope NumberDummy will verify what I think it all means. From what I can tell it came off the line as 2WD and had a M-H or other conversion to 4WD. Wiring harness needs some love and we are going through checking everything else out to build up the plan for it. The one item I haven't found in looking for parts is the lower door skins.

It isn't a factory 4WD. Working on parts identification now. The work space isn't at my house so it may be a few days before updates on different things.
Front axle Dana 44 closed knuckle.
Transfer Case is Dana Corp Spicer Model 24 b/m number 300205. Napco conversion? Something else?
Drum brakes on all four wheels.

Not sure how many posts are necessary before you can do so, but use our Classified section for finding the parts you need.

FTE is unsurpassed for technical information for old Ford trucks.However,for simply networking for parts/vehicles the best place is the Facebook 57-60 group, if you're not already aware of it.

I - and Internet brands - don't like to push people over there - but they are good at what they're intending to do, finding parts/vehicles.They've got nearly 1400 members -all 57-60 owners - that's a lot. But they are not a technical forum, that's what FTE is for.We would love to lure more of those guys here for discussion.

THartman Welcome to the orphanage! I could not find a color for code V, It looks like your truck was made in Kansas on the 4th of august with the much desired 3 speed OD. I kinda like those turbine rims on your truck. What transfer case and front diferential do you have. I think if it was a conversion from MH it would have a plate on the dash or elsewhere on the truck. There are a couple of minor differences with the 4x4s from the factory. Your truck look nice and solid!

Thanks all for the welcome and the additional information. I spent a while lurking while I negotiated with the PO to make sure I was getting a good deal. There aren't too many 59 4x4s around to do a comparison on pricing.

Overall it was a good weekend for parts. I picked up a Carter AFB for $25 and a ECZ 9425 B Intake for $75.

A = January / M = December. The letter I is skipped.

04H = August 4, 1959. If it was September 4, it would be a 1960.

3 speed O/D not offered with 4WD.

If it was a Marmon-Herrington conversion, it would have a plaque screwed to the face of the dash showing how to shift the transfer case.

Your truck was originally a 1959 F100 2WD w/a 292 2V assembled in Kansas City MO. It was converted to 4WD by a previous owner. Who knows what the 4WD specific parts are from?

Besides the 3 speed O/D, the 5,000 lb. GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is another 2WD dead give-away.

Factory F100 4WD would have a 5,600 lb. GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating).

Edit: Spotted something else: Only 2WD Custom Cabs were available with a horn ring. All 1959/60 4WD's came w/a horn button.

These 4WD's rode and steered like oxcarts, no P/S was available until 1973, so a horn ring would interfere with steering the beasts.

It's a really cool truck. I'd like to hear what kind of running gear was used in the conversion. Is it a divorced transfer case?

Bill, what I was trying to say, was that I cringe when I recommend someone visits that group, instead of only FTE an INTERNET BRANDS owned site.I know they frown on it also,and I really hope this latest forum can stand on its' own, eventually.Most of the really skilled, talented guys remained in the re-aligned 48-56 section.I'm in those guys league.

Nice find... I've been looking for a '59 or '60, F250 4x4 with very little luck. They are very few around here or totally rotted yet highly priced. I'd really like a '60, since it's my DOB.

I think this indicates a Napco conversion. Is there anything else I should look for?

Bolted direct to tranny or with a short driveshaft connecting the two? I always associate Napco with brand X trucks. Last year before I was involved much with this site I passed up a '52 F3 with a Coleman conversion. That thing was nice too. I might just pick up the transfer case from my buddie's '58 3/4 ton Apache, specially now that I know Napco did fords as well. I can check the numbers on it next weekend easy since it is already out of the truck. Please post up some progress pictures as you go along. 'Before' pictures are always good!

A short drive shaft connects them.

Thartman That is the divorced transfer case that ford used along with a dana 44 front diff.
Some pictures of the transfer case and cross member would by nice.
Have you confirmed the numbers on the frame with the numbers on the glove box.
It sounds like you have the same components ford used.
In your cab is there a triangular gusset plate attached to the B post and the floor. Another thing is where the radiator support is a mounted to the frame. On the 4x4's they used a compression spring to allow some flex.
