New 78 350 SC CS

Thanks for the welcome! I jumped the gun and posted a question in the 73-79 forum to which a couple of you So Cal folks thankfully answered so I know there are real live people out there.<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p

I will try and keep it short, I grew up playing with fords, mostly, with a couple of mopars and several motorcycles thrown in. Beginning with a ’64 Falcon in ’74, and ending a few years ago with a ‘73 mustang conv. I miss ‘em all…….. I just could not let my kids miss out on the feel and sound of a gas guzzeling V8!<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p

So 6mos ago I started looking for a 74-75 supercab, good work truck and room for the kids and gear, and no smog!! The search finally wore me down and I grabbed a 1978 F350 Supercab camper special, more truck than I need (really?) and I still have to deal with smog but no cats and no smog pump so it should be manageable. Has everything else I was looking for 460/AC/Cruise/rear bench/ sliding rear window/ pop out side windows (provided by PO to be installed by me), minimal rust mostly covered by the recent paint :-X15.
<O:p</O:p

Any way I am STOKED got it last weekend drove it down to SD from Riverside <ST1:p</ST1:pwith no issues, and then it mostly sat. Got some time on it today and made some progress with general cleanup, fluids, plugs, filters etc. Needs some carb work probably a re-build or re-place but hoping to hold on that for a while if I can get it adjusted well enough. Choke seems inoperable except by hand so it is kind of a two person start job, and running really rich by the smell of it but hey at least I am starting it everyday and letting the neighbors hear it!<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p

<O:p</O:pI guess my first question besides the smog thread in 73-79 is how do you post pictures in a thread and how do you get the little picture (technical term) by your name?
:-drink

Welcome TexinCali, I like the sound of your '78.

Here's a how to on postin' pic's:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post11371989

To change your 'Avatar', click on User CP (blue bar, upper left), then 'Edit Avatar' (option 2 under settings & options). Then upload your pic or photobucket address.

Right under 'Edit Avatar' is 'Edit Signature'. Mess around (technical term) with that until you get it the way you like.

When you're all done, enjoy this facinating video on IT help desks - old skool.

Welcome to FTE & SoCal Chapter

CA Ford Passenger Car/Truck/Bronco//Econoline/Aerostar/Ranger/Explorer and etc DSO codes:

71 = Los Angeles (SoCal) Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered your truck from.

72 = San Jose (NorCal) Ford District Sales Office.

You can get all sorts of info from Kevin Marti (martiauto.com) for your 1978 F350 Stupor Cab Camper Special. Marti has ALL the original FoMoCo records that pertain to 1967/79 vehicles.

FoMoCo has none of these records any longer, as they planned to THROW IT ALL AWAY in the late 1980's. Marti found out, got ALL of it.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Woah!!! Sorry bout the big text. Not sure what happened there.

Evaporative Emission System (Evap/em): Fuel vapor valve(s) located at the top of the (tank(s), Vapor hose(s) route from the valve(s) along the right (passenger) side frame rail to the charcoal cannister.

Cannister has valve w/a nipple on it, corrogated paper hose routes from valve to a straight plastic fitting that twists into a hole on the side of the air cleaner.

Same basic setup: 1977/79 F100/350 351M/400/460 / 1978/79 Bronco 351M/400 // 1977/78 LTD/Grand Marquis/Lincoln Town Car/Mark V 351M/351W/400/460 / 1979 similar except there were no 460's in Passenger Cars after 1978.

1977/79 Econoline 351W/460 also similar but there's next to no room to see any of these parts under their hoods.

Hmmm, I see Speed Control in the above pic. When vehicles came w/optional Speed Control they usually came w/the optional tilt wheel feature. Does your truck have it?

I read thru your posts, didn't see any mention of it.

Be aware that the tilt wheel is operated by the turn signal handle. Gently press the handle forward, if it has tilt = BOING!

You may have to wiggle the wheel a bit while pressing the handle forward, because more than likely if has a tilt wheel, it hasn't been operated since Carter was prez.

You'd be amazed on how many peeps are unaware their FoMoCo vehicles (1965 and later cars, 1978 and later trucks) have a tilt wheel. AMC/GM/ChryCo used a separate steering column lever to operate it.

FoMoCo didn't have a separate lever until 1981, then for Escort/Lynx initially only. F150/350's didn't have a separate lever until the 1990's.

TexinCali 04-10-2012 01:13 AM

Thanks Bill, glad I found you guys!! I will check the tilt tomorrow that would be a bonus.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
On the evap I guess I am looking for an air cleaner, I have no hole except where the oil filler vent connects, snorkel and heat riser(?) form manifold to bot of air cleaner.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
The gas tanks seem to be run as you say and as shown in the shop manual I have (cd from e-bay don't know if it is good but had to have something) to the upper canister (vapor canister purge valve?) but so is a hose from what I think is the crab bowl vent and two vacuum lines. With the other canister disconnected.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Would it make sense for the gas tanks to vent to one and the carb to the other? <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
It has been awhile since I have gotten into something like this should be fun and am already learning a bunch.

Thanks again!

Well sorry abut that apparently writing in word and copying the text over adds some interesting punctuation, won't do that again!

NumberDummy 04-10-2012 02:28 AM

I have all the parts catalog pics you need to see, but I'm in Hacienda Heights and my parts catalogs are on microfiche.

The 1973/79 Ford LIGHT Truck Parts Catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com

How much of the air cleaner do you have? Could you post a pic of the engine compartment with the air cleaner in place?

TexinCali 04-10-2012 10:10 AM

I will post a pic of air cleaner later today, also check into the parts catalog, might be something I need at some point.<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p
What I really need is a vacuum diagram I have a feeling that somewhere along the line they were mukked up pretty good, this is the only sticker left.<O:p</O:p
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/p...ictureid=97763<O:p></O:p>
I need to figure how to get this info in my signature;<O:p></O:p>
<O:p</O:p
1978 F350 / 460 / air /<ST1:pcalifornia</ST1:place emissions, from previous research sounds like it should have PCV/ACL/EVAP/EGR/SPK. This is from the "Emissions Control Applications FoMoCo " scan posted on this site.<O:p</O:p

TexinCali 04-11-2012 12:44 PM

Okay here are the air cleaner pics.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/p...ictureid=97834

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/p...ictureid=97833

I was thinking ( I know dangerous) that since the 1978 350 at 9200 GVWR is considered "heavy duty" even in california that there were no components on the air cleaner except snorkel and heat riser tube? Sorry if my terminology is incorrect all of these abbreviations give me a headache!:-X19

NumberDummy 04-11-2012 12:56 PM

Truck has a charcoal cannister, so it came with Evap/Em.

Look on the side of the aircleaner behind the snorkle, there will be either a plastic tube or a hole where it belongs. This is where the hose from the valve on the cannister connects to.

Note: CA DMV sez you have 10 days to register it, 30 days to pay the fees, otherwise penalty fees begin to occur.

You'll need the smog test first, but because parts are missing, it may not pass.

Go to the SoCal AutoClub (if you're a member), you can get a short waiver to fix it so it'll pass.

You can get the same at DMV, but without an appointment, be prepared to wait and wait and wait and wait.

btw: It's the SELLERS responsibilty that a vehicle passes the smog test.

btw, part II: Notice in post 5 that the picture posting expert is FTE member 76f350spercamprspeal. His '76 S/CS was sold new in NorCal, now resides inoperable in San Berdoo, originally came with PCV, EGR, Evap/Em.

Excepting the charcoal cannister, all of the emission parts are MIA. Smarmy young 'un had no clue, was bragging it never came with emissions parts. Uh huh, but when I went there and looked at it, pointed out the facts.

It's inoperable not only because of the missing parts, but because the tags expired in 2008, he was also unaware of this fact when he bought it. :-X15

Now he's SOL, the seller is MIA, the registration and penalty fees are prolly 3 grand by now, 6 times what the mangy truck is worth. It cannot be driven in CA with expired tags, so who could he sell it to besides a boneyard?

:-hijacked

This is a Class C Motorhome, correct? If so, the motorhome body was installed on an Econoline "Cut-Away." Body cut away behind the front seats by FoMoCo.

Is the aft axle tank steel or plastic? Besides the aft axle tank, does it have a mid-ship tank?
