2008 F250 error code p0088
 

Greeting all! I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue? I have a 2008 F-250 6.4L diesel. Here's the chain of events. Forgive me, if it's confusing; I"m not a motor head at all.
- 2 times, cruise control stopped working. Once I shut the truck off, then started again, cruise would work.
- Stomped the gas pedal to the floor, to merge onto interstate, and the truck practically flooded out. Seemed the more gas I gave it, the slower it went. Real sluggish.
- Finally, the next time I drove the truck, the "check engine" light came on.

Auto Zone scanned the truck for me, came back with the p0088 code; said "Fuel Rail pressure High", or something along those lines.
One guy at Auto Zone told me something like what I described happend to his truck, and it was due to bad oil. Apparently diesel engine oil has certain specifications? This guy said that if the wrong oil is used, it breaks down (at 4,500 miles for him) and "froths", which increases pressure in some of the systems in the truck? Is this true?
I'm just wondering if an oil change will fix my problem, or am I looking a something a lil more pricey?
Any insight, advice, or input you might have, would be greatly appreciated.

That P0088 code is not a code that you wanna see. Chances are your HPFP is going south. If you're under warranty, no big deal. If you're paying out of pocket it's gunna hurt! All engine oils have certain specs. You need to have CJ-4 rated oil. Changing the oil will do nothing for you in terms of fixing that code. As far as your cruise control intermittantly not working, it could be a couple things, but my guess would be a brake switch fault. it would keep your CC from working, but not set a "Check engine" light.

My bet is the cruise did not work because of the code. If the code is still there then I'd have Ford look at it.

Before you do so make sure all your fluids are correct and that you have changed your fuel filters and drained the separator recently.

So did you get any word on what the issue is?

The error code was, in fact, for the fuel pump. However, they were gonna try to just start with replacing the fuel filters first. The diesel supplement suggests changing those every 20k miles, but the dealership said every 7,500 miles or so? Regardless, one of my filters was almost completely clogged. Replacing those cleared the code, so hopefully all is fine now. Should it turn out to be the pump, it IS still covered under factory warranty. Whew! So i got a little piece of mind! 10K fuel filter changes are the norm for everyone. 5K on the oil.

Use only OEM filters.

You might change sooner if you run alot of bio. Keep in mind that you should only run up to 5% bio in this motor. I would recommend staying away from it.

"ground fault brake light" would disable the cruise control?I've had that code for 4 mos ,waiting to let the dealer chase it .I've never used CC but was thinking of trying it when I tow soon?

I use the cruise control when towing and the tow haul. I prefer it.

I should clarify the bio. Unless you know for a fact the % and that it is a good source.

I have had that brake fault a couple of times. It makes the computer think the brakes are being used. Applying the brakes while in Cruise control disables the CC, so if the brake switch sends the signal to the ECU that the brakes are applied, it won't allow the CC to function.
