Sean's thoughts
Just stick with a diesel and put a computer, intake and exhaust. You should be able to get a consistent 18-22 MPG. Plus side is Diesel will last sa hell of a lot longer.... You should look at buying a truck if your goint to worry about gas.... But to each his own...

2012 f250 lariat crew shortbox 6500 miles display shows 8.5mpg all stock except for single toolbox with about 200lbs in it from what im reading this isnt good maybe something is wrong? when i purchased the truck in november it had 20 miles on it and the display showed 9.8mpg and its been going down the more miles i get on it. i haul trailers occasionally but nothing big and no more than a couple miles at a time once a week.

That depends on where you live? What type of gas you run? What gears you have? Heavy foot or light foot? Have you done your first oil change? How about air filter? biz ;) |
I live in Chicago area. Use regular unleaded not sure on gears and just a average foot Have gotten oil change but not sure on air filter because the truck came with a full warranty until 125k but only if dealership does all maintenance

I have a 2012 F250 4x4 6.2 gas. I just recently took a trip from California to Indiana and back. I tow a 24' Dutchman light travel trailer, 6500 lbs. loaded. I previously had a 2008 F250 4x4 V10. I would get 11.8 highway not towing 8.5 towing. The dealer told me they had improved on the fuel economy on the 6.2. I was very dissapointed on my trip. The best mpg for the whole trip was 7.8. I can only imagine what the mpg would be if I towed something closer to my maximum towing capacity.

3.73's all original, 18,000 miles. Also not pleased with the six speed trans, shifts all the time even in tow haul. Also has a real hard shift from 3rd to 4th while towing under acceleration, it bangs and sounds like the trans is going to fall out of the truck. I also wonder if the gear ratio's with the six speed while towing is responsible for the poor fuel economy.

Just made a trip to Georgia from east Texas, 1552 mile round trip pulling a 4 horse slant with 10 ft living quarters, not sure of weight but 'Bertha' as we call her is 33' long! 2 horses and loaded with clothes, hay, feed tack, kids and all necessary stuff, we got 9 mpg the whole way, running 70-80 mph the whole way, passing 18 wheelers uphill and only slowing down when someone said I gotta potty!! Lol
Very satisfied with performance of wife's new truck!! |

It takes energy to move stuff. You have to overcome inertia, first with the payload and then moving the air out of the way when you're up to speed. You also have to overcome friction, which is why we invented the wheel, both with the air when you're up to speed and with the ground with nice sticky rubber tires. The more weight you move, the more energy it takes to do it. The more friction you generate, the more energy it takes to do it. You're driving an already heavy brick-shaped object pulling a large amount of brick-shaped weight behind it, and you're surprised when you burn more fuel to go the same distance compared to running empty? Sure, you can try to find ways to eke out a little more energy from the fuel or to convert it to mechanical force a little more efficiently or to simply use less of it when only minimal power is required, and a well-designed, turbo-charged gas engine does all of those things, but it's still not magic. You're asking for an aerodynamic, light-weight vehicle that can also tow a heavy load and be comfortable doing it. If that's the case, break out your wallet, because you're going to be using some exotic materials in custom manufacturing processes that will cost way more than not getting 25 mpg towing at 80 mph. The alternative, I guess, is to use something like the old 8.1L GM engines that got such terrible mileage empty that you didn't notice much of a decrease when towing.

my little 5.4 tows my backhoe just as easy as that new 6.2 does.
I don't own the 6.2L, but the kind of expectations you people are putting on what appears to be a very well designed and capable gasser engine pulling around an 8,000+ pound brick with whatever else loaded in the bed and attached to the bumper seems ridiculous. I'm one of those guys who has the 6.7L but could probably get away with the 6.2L since I'm not doing nearly as much heavy hauling as I thought I was going to do. I have no regrets with the 6.7L, but I can tell you I'd never choose to go find me a 5.4 and run it ragged till the problems started showing up. A good friend of mine has an '06 F150 with the 5.4L, and he's lucky if he can squeeze 14 miles out of it for every gallon of gas, empty on the highway. I have to work to bring my mileage down that far with twice the truck. |

That's 1.5 to 2 miles better than I would get with the V10 around town. But I loved that truck.
Avg 11 towing 6-8000lbs. |
I am happy with my 6.2, did I sound otherwise? Yeah better mileage would be a plus but so would a Lamborghini as a chase car so I can look cool on way to barrel races! Lol
That is why I have a truck to pull with (the wife's) and mine for everything else! Black Betty (as we so joyfully call her) rocks!! |
I am a newbie Ford owner - have had my 2012 F350 standard cab 4x4 auto for a week and turning 500 miles tonight. My calculated mileage is 14.1 and the truck computer says 13.9 most of the driving has been around town - however 25% has been highway and I stepped down on that skinny pedal when I was on the highway.
