1990 F-150 302 Stalls When Put in Reverse

I hope someone can help me. My 1990 F-150 302 truck has been stalling lately when I put it in reverse. This occurrs when the engine is hot or cold. Dies kinda quick after putting it in reverse. This is the only time it stalls.

I'm currently going through the same problem. I have a '94 E-250, and I just had the trans replaced, "see page 1 '94 E4OD Replacement". The mechanics I've talked to, says the torque converter is locking up, but the guy who replaced the tranny says its the TPS. I'm convinced its the tranny, since it started stalling the day I picked it up from the Transmission shop.

Throttle position sensor.
Its a sensor underneath your throttle body.

I have a 93 F-150 and it did the same thing. I work as a tech at a ford dealership, what i did was clean out the IAc, idle air control. Its just two bolts and a connector, take it off and take a cloth and carberator cleaner and clean it out, mine hasnt had a problem since. -Mike

Damn, thats the same problem I'm having with my 94! When I shift to reverse it stalls, it always starts back up again though. Who here is still having this problem, or what did you do to fix it?

A friend of mine just put a new tranny in his truck. It turns out on his truck,(it's a diesel with the auto) that ford puts a low tranny fluid cutout in it. When the fluid gets too low it shuts down in reverse to let you know. He didn't, pulling his 35' horse trailer to a show he blew the tranny. None of the idiot lights ever came on to indicate a problem. However he is in litigation with a local quick change oil shop because he had the full service every three thousand miles. The most recently was a week before he left for his trip. What's the saying, you get what you pay for. Hope this helps, don't know if it's related to your problem but definitely food for thought.

The 1990 Bronco I gave to my dad stalled in reverse. This all started out when the air conditioner was on and got progressively worse. I did a check of the TPS and it was way off. An adjustment to .993vdc and it was like a new truck. Good place to start. I ended up having to take the throttle body off as I had to elongate the holes to achieve the voltage I wanted. While it was off I cleaned the throttle body and IAC. So as previously posted these will most likely cure problem. Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

I have a '91 F-150 with 5.0 that had the same problem. Mine started right after fixing the AC, so we suspected that. NOPE. Read this board, and replaced the AIC today. Purrs at idle now! Thanks gang.

start by checking for codes even if CEL isnt on, could have stored codes, make sure truck is at operating temp, before checking for codes
