we use to have a 06 F150 2wd crew cab 5.4L shortbed XLT that had 127000 miles and I hated every minute of owning it glad my mom has her 97 Expy now even though it does have more miles.

It's all good, sh%t happens. :-X06

The 5.4s get a bad rep for being under powered and to a certain extent, that's true. Where the 5.4 struggles is from a dead stop. With my truck, from a stop shes a little slow, but when she makes that first shift to 2nd, she starts pulling hard. Sometimes I just pull out and ease into the gas and get up to around 20mph and punch it..... with 35" mud tires and stock 3.73 gearing she pulls pretty damn hard. That flowmaster 10 series coming through a 4" tailpape sounds pretty good too :-X06

I am good I am good with ya. LOL And it wasn't that it was under powered it was that left and right that truck fell apart. I opened the tailgate the handle broke. I started the engine and it would take 30 to 45 seconds to start the seats were pretty trashed really but anyways my mom loved it when she was behind the wheel she had no problems I never drove it (I didn't have a liscence or my learners permit like now.) I think it might have been the fact of the truck being in a wreck.

Yeah I hear ya there. A few years back I had a 95 jeep grand cherokee with a 5.2 in it. The motor ran perfect and sounded awesome but the rest of the vehicle couldn't hold itself together.

sorry folks.... back to the thread :D

Redneckfordf2502002 09-07-2012 11:06 AM

ya we can get back on topic now sorry for the disruption. Well since I don't have any other 5.4L or 4.6Ls I will post my buddies truck:
2005 Ford F350 2wd regular cab long bed 5.4L 238,000 miles runs great but a little underpowered for what he uses it for but the truck gets the job done.

01 Screw F250 5.4L @ 151k
bought from original owner at 50k in 2003
oil every 5k - other consumables per the maintenance guide

driver side exhaust manifold done to pass inspection at 120k
a/c compressor out at 128k
alternator out at 135k
bad COP boot at 140k
blew cyl 3 plug at 150k

plan to get another 5+ years out of her and top 200k

1998 F-250 LD 5.4L 2V - 238,000 Miles, still runs very strong.
Helicoiled 2 plugs, swapped exhaust manifolds for shorty headers, had issues on and off with COP going bad, otherwise it's a champ

2005 Expedition XLS 5.4L 3V - 82,000 Miles. Runs very strong. I just bought this truck a month ago and have already fallen in love with it. :D

1998 Explorer Sport 4.0 L V-6 - 276,000 miles. I know it's not a modular engine, but I'm still proud of this little Explorer. Change oil every 3,000 miles and swapped out a trans at 175,000, but the engine is all original.

My Dad:

1998 F-250 LD 5.4L 2V - 260,000 Miles. Has pulled trailers and been worked since he bought it and it has been a very strong truck for pulling. Has had to replace plugs/COP's, but has not had any major issues, just regular maintenance. He'll probably run this truck until the body rusts out around the engine.

Given my experience running the 5.4L Triton over the last 10 years, I would gladly go buy another one provided it had maintenance records to prove that it was taken care of properly.

1998 E150 4.6 with 153k. Just bought it this week end. Previous owner regularly changed oil, M-1, every 5k. He either hauled a 400lb bike plus tools and other parts inside, or pulled an open trailer with two bikes on it accross the country several times a year. He finally changed the original plugs/wires several months ago (said mpg highway jumped from 17 to 19 @ 75-80).
Never an engine problem, receipts show tensioner belt pulley around the 70k mark. Trans was rebuilt 10k ago but it was shifting fine, problem was a cracked case. Shap said since it would run $800 just to fix that, he might as well spend a little more and have it rebuilt since it already had 140k. Off topic, they told him there was corrosion between the steel trans mount and aluminum case, built up enough to crack the case?!?!?!?!?! Personally I never heard of that before.
BTW the 250 mile drive home with it, cruise set on 65mph 99.8% of the way, light traffic, she gave me 21.75 mpg!

Thanks. Nope, no tunes.... just a flowmaster muffler and K&N filter. Got a little over 215k on her now.
