I too have looked into the Lexus SC as an IFS donor...I guess I didn't follow through with it because I don't have a project in the works right now that needs an IFS. I did find quite a few donor cars here in the SoCal area for not much cash...about the same as a CV IFS. Glad to see someone using this IFS, the pics look great!

I totaled a 92 Lexus SC 300 today at work and kept wondering to myself how I can buy it for the IFS.

lexcoe 02-28-2012 01:36 AM

Not sure if the SC300 is the same as the 400, might have to look into that........John

51PanelMan 02-28-2012 09:56 AM

Looks the same to me.

The 300 is a 6 cyl and 400 is an 8 cyl. Just checked both models in my parts database and the part numbers are the same, as well as the price, for both models. I'll post the parts diagram from both models later this evening.

EDIT: Was able to post the parts diagrams now instead of later this evening.

I just called a guy in the LA area who has an ad on CL for SC300/SC400 parts...he services Lexus cars exclusively and buys many cars from owners who don't want to pay to have them repaired. He says that the 92-97 are all the same with respect to the IFS and that there is no difference between the 300 or 400. He says that he will sell the IFS, rotor to rotor with shocks and R&P, for $400. Just throwing it out as a point of reference...

51PanelMan 02-28-2012 10:57 AM

My parts dabase shows 92-00 to be the same. The SC 400 has more parts listed for the front suspension than the SC 300. Check out the lower control arms for the difference.

John, did you also use the rear crossmember (Engine cradle rear)?

Check out the OEM price for just the crossmember.

I have the rear crossmember but its kinda ugly and might not be that easy to use.
So what does a good hot rodder do, make his own of course. LOL

So i think the 300 might be what we call a Soarer in Australia, good to know they use the same bits.

I will take some more pics today.
Geez, gotta say say i am a little surprised at how much interest this has generated.

Heres a pic from straight in front as AX requested, lower arm is sitting a little above horizontal here tho. John

and hopefully this is one from side on with the wheel and risc rotor removed. John

Next question...how are you going to install the spring/shock assembly? The OEM coilover looks almost like a Macpherson strut and rather bulky...

lexcoe 02-28-2012 05:30 PM

Airbags are in its future on my install, however normal coilovers would be simple to fit after fabricating a upper pickup point on the frame.

i am looking at mounting my airbags inboard using a bellcrank linkage to hook up to the lower arm. John

In your posts, push the mountain and sun icon (in the full post editor) and paste the URL into the dialog that pops up.. then the image will display without having to clikc on it..

I'm sorry if I seem like a pest, but I'd like to know what the distance (metric or inches) is from the center of the lower A-arm pivot to the top of the frame. What size tires are on it in the pictures?

lexcoe 02-29-2012 03:06 AM

Sorry Ax, been a bit busy here today, but you cerctainly arent being a pest.
As i mentioned, i am amazed how much interest this install has generated.

Anyway, 11 inches from the lower inner pivot to the top of the frame,
and, 235/45 x17 inch tyres on the setup/roller wheels in the pictures.

I am going away for a few days this coming weekend so progrees will slow a little, but the rear crossmember for the rear lower inners is next on the agenda.
Hows your panel truck coming along, i always enjoy your updates and insightful posts

AXracer 02-29-2012 07:38 AM

Getting the panel back on track, just went thru an unexpected divorce, ownership of the panel was in dispute for over a year. I did end up with it finally.
Thanks for asking and the kind words.
I am following your build with intense interest.
