2013 Ford F250

Hello, I am new here, and I found this thread and read through it all. Very interesting. We just bought a new 2013 F250 Lariat CC, 6.2, 4x4, 3.73, 10,000 GVWR package, with 20" tires.

So far only about 450 miles on it and we have only driven it around town with some very short interstate driving within Omaha. It seems to be staying at around 11.4 mpg. I am a pretty conservative driver, so I see the Instant RPG shoot up to 30 a lot when coasting, etc.

We will be pulling a 35' Jayco Eagle TT weighing in around 9000 lbs with it. First week of May we will pull it down to Southern Missouri (about 350-400 miles one way) and then in August we are pulling it to Nevada (about 1500 miles one way) which will take us on I80 through the mountains in WY and UT, so we will see how it does there.

Looking forward to getting a lot of good use out of this truck! :)

Dave

Let us know how it pulls and mpg on trip!

My father purchased a 2012 F250 single cab with the 6.2 last june. Since then he has put on about 8000 miles and has gotten 12 mpg driving around town.

As for me, i have a 2011 F150 ext cab xlt with ecoboost, 3.73 rear and max tow. First year the around town mpg went from 14.5 to 15. Since then it has plummeted to 13.7. Last year i replaced the stock tires with some Michelin A/T's load range E. These new tires added 40 extra pounds to the trucks weight. I know they can recalibrate for wider/taller tires, but im not sure if they can do anything about the tire weight? Either way Im going to bring it to the dealer to see if any codes come up. The truck does have a few of the typical EB problems like when in 6th gear under a load it surges/skips. Im hoping there actually is something wrong lol.

With that kinda mpg i would rather trade in my f150 for a truck like my fathers and loose 1.5 mpg. On the other hand I will be calling my salesman on monday and will be looking to trade my f150 for a new Focus. I hate to get rid of it, but its a higher monthly payment than a focus would be and the focus gets double the mpg. I will just have to save my pennies and buy a cheap truck.

I have a 2010 F250 Crew with the 6.4L. Mixed rural/ town I average 16-17mpg, Interstate I have hit as high as 21, but average 18-19. I am ready for tires, shocks, brakes, etc, and am considering putting the cash toward a new truck.

I tow a 10k trailer, so I need a 3/4 ton minimum, but am having a having a hard time with $7800 upgrade for a diesel motor. I may look at the 6.2L for the savings. I just can't see driving it to 125,000 miles. It won't be worth squat.

16.6 HWY @20,000 miles

Drove to AZ and back to WA without trailer. Highest was 16.6 on HWY and currently at 15.8 city. I use supreme chevron gas with pennzoil full synthetic blend, with a fram filter. I will change to motorcraft oil filter next change. 5 star tuning in the futue as well.

I have a 2013 F350 4x4 with a 4.30 gears, 7500 miles on the odometer. I am getting 12.5 in the city and 16.5 on the highway.

GoCamping 05-02-2013 09:29 PM

Wow 16.5 highway and 4.30s ... no lead foot?

MPG's and Gas

I'm seeing similar to WillTim with my 2011, -250, CC, 4.30. I've seen as high as 16.5 (once, last summer, all highway), but am actually averaging mid-14's going to/from work, mostly highway (20 miles) but about 2-3 miles of red-lights and hills. Pulling my old 6500lb TT I used to average about 8.0 while towing. Taking my new 8200lb TT from the dealer to the house last weekend (~100 miles) I got around 8 as well, but with ethanol free gas.

I have noticed that the gas makes a decent difference. Because of the knock sensors, the truck will generate an extra 10HP when you go from 87 to 91 octane. (See "ask the engineer" thread, I believe). I've seen that correspond to about a 5+% increase in gas mileage all-around. I also noted another 5+% increase (10 - 15% total) when going to ethanol free gas (87 octane). As long as the price difference is less than 10% from ethanol free compared to 87, it makes more sense. I have not tried 91 octane ethanol free yet to see what that yields... The local price difference from Costco's 87 (about $3.10) to ethanol-free 91 ($3.80) is a bit more than I want to do for a 30-gallon fill-up. The ethanol free 87 is aobut $3.39.

Have you guys checked your speedo against a GPS? Mine was off with stock tires, so much that now that I have 35" tires, my speedo is EXACT. I've checked it with 3 different GPS units.

My mileage will forever suck, I have a heavy foot, heavy tires, and a 93 tune that just won't quit. }>

F16Vip3r 05-03-2013 05:28 PM

Speedometer

I have checked mine against a GPS, and its within about 1 mph.

Additionally, I did the math for 6th gear and the 4.30 rear axle where I'm doing 1750 rpm at 60mph (to figure my # tire revolutions/minute). I found a tire website that gave me #revolutions/mile for my size tires, and my calculation came out within about 1/2 revolution of the number of revolutions/mile.

However, with cruise set at 60, I checked my odometer and stopwatch against several mile markers on the I-40 while driving home from work. When I did this, I seemed to be off by about .1/mile, and I think I was at 56 sec/mile marker... although that seemed to vary from 1 mile to the next.

I chocked it up to "shoddy gov't work" on the highway markers since 2 out of 3 seemed to match.

I bought my truck used with what appear to be the standard, upgraded 20" Ford Rims (though I think I read they didn't even offer the 2011 F-250 with them). According to the window sticker it came with 18" tires.

A little MPG update, 2012 in sig with a Leer cap and 350# misc. (Cat scale weight 8,200#) all hand calculated.

I put 1,860 miles this week on the truck. This is combined City/ Hwy
Started from CO to AZ, 1 fill up, 65 mph average no head wind- 16.19 mpg (only hwy)
AZ to CA, 2 fill ups, 75-80 mph with a strong head wind- 12.50 mpg average
CA to OR, 2 fill ups, 65-75 mph little to no wind- 14.48 mpg average

If you can keep your foot out of it, some decent mpg can be had. The manual transmission feature through the mountains performed flawlessly going up and coming down the mountains with out having to touch the brakes at all. :-drink

Denny, if you read this I think you'll be really happy towing with the new one on the way. This 6 speed trans w/ manual feature is great.

Only complaint is getting a new seat broke in for these long runs. :-hair ;) Like others my speedometer is off by almost 2 mph using a GPS to check.

I wanted to give an update since I posted the above in March. We had our first long trip with the 2013 F250 pulling the 35' Camper. Estimate we were pulling about 8600 pounds, and there was a couple hundred pounds in the truck bed as well.

We drove from Omaha Nebraska to an area near Fort Leonardwood in southern Missouri. This amounted to about 900 miles total for the round trip. We stayed on interstates and 4 lane highways. The terrain was hilly, and the speed limit was 70-75 in most places. On the way down, I drove about 65-70 mph, and on the way up, I was at 70, sometimes a little over.

To recap, this is a 6.2L V8 F250. I also have installed Timbren's on the rear suspension. When I connect the camper, the front does not raise at all thanks to adjustments to the Equalizer hitch. This trip took us from 1200 miles to 2100 miles total on the truck.

Ok, now that all that is out of the way, over the 900 miles we averaged 6.4 mpg. This is no where near what i was expecting. I was hoping for 8-9 mpg. We have a 35 gallon tank and so we had to fill up fairly often. One nice thing, was apart from hearing the truck work harder due to the load, I really couldn't tell the camper was back there, so that was nice.

I did at times use the cruise control. The only problem with the cruise control, is that sometimes on a hill, it would kick into 2nd, and the RPMs would almost redline at 5800 rpms. Without cruise control on a similar hill, I could do just fine with it only kicking into 3rd. So the cruise control seems to go a bit overboard. I had it in tow-haul mode the entire time.

Our next test will be in Aug. We are pulling the same camper from Omaha to Burning Man, just north of Reno. This will be a 3000 mile round trip. The obviously tricky part will be going through the mountains in WY and UT. We will be on I80 the entire way. Some parts will be flatter (Nebraska). I hope to do better on average with the MPG than with this other trip.

F16Vip3r 05-24-2013 07:23 AM

I've got a 2011 F-250 6.2L, 20" tires, 4.30 gears. I pulled a 36', 9000lb TT last weekend on a 400 mile round trip to KY with some decent hills. I was actually surprised that I averaged (hand calculated) just below 8.0 MPG for the trip. This wasn't much worse than the MPG that I got towing my 30' TT what weighed in (full) at about 7500lbs. Of course, I tow with the cruise set at 60mph, use the "M" mode, and anticipate hills/crests manually to put her in the most fuel efficient condition.

I'm about to trade her in for a 2013 F-350 6.7L , though... We are about to make a 2500 mile move x-country to CA, and once I get there the gas/diesel prices are pretty comparable (diesel being cheaper at some points). That, combined with my expected increase in MPG unloaded to/from work (35 miles one way, no traffic) each day and our planned trips through the mountains, was enough to offset my increased monthly payments through decreased fuel cost. Additionally, the $10k residual value between an 8 y/o gas truck and a 6y/o diesel with 45,000 less miles (in 6 years) should offset my initial $7000 outlay.

Anyhow, I've got no complaints about the 6.2, but I've been drooling over the diesel. Much better availability/deals can be found in the southeast as opposed to Prius country. It was a last minute decision, and I hope I don't regret it in the future. I should be exchanging trucks tomorrow.
