6.2 mpg service truck
 

We have a small fleet of 6.2L ford 4wd extended cabs single wheel. trucks usually weigh in around 11,000lbs. Avg fuel is 9.5mpg to 11mpg. Still cheaper to run compared to a diesel. Been a good truck and we have had no major engine issues with our fleet. My service truck has 108,500 miles and has had no engine issues. usual brake wear and tear. Have had a issue with the track bar from frame to axle but replaced and back to making money. Been a good truck! thanks from wyoming.:-drink

I know this stretch of HWY must of had a Wyoming tail wind!

Just got back from a roughly 500 mile round trip through the Smokey Mountains.

My truck has seemed to get better mileage ever since it hit 15k on the clock...... I just got back an now have 17k on the odometer. It averaged 16 overall. It will get 14 for my day to day driving but the hwy seems to level off at 16mpg running 65-70

It dropped obviously in the mountains up the pulls but also got higher on the flat roads prior to the hills.

I saw earlier someone posted a pic of 19mpg...... I also noticed it was after a reset as it only was 59 miles since the reset. I have seen 19mpg on my truck but by the time you get several hundred miles on the truck over various hills then its back to 16mpg. Now if I could find a perfectly flat road with no head wind at sea level then I am sure I could get 18-19mpg on a tank......... But I have yet to be on that road.

16 is pretty respectable for sure. That's about the best I've seen after a 300 mile drive from Tampa to the Savannah area... flat except for some overpasses.

Do any of you run E85 on a regular basis? I typically get 14 on 87, but using E85 it drops to 11.5-12ish at best. Runs good though.

My dad Filled up his truck with e-85 once because I kept telling him to. Well long story short he said never again. He said the truck went right through a tank (f350 single cab, 4.56, full tool boxes) like it was water. He said it felt the same performance wise. He was at like 9ish. That was only one tank all city driving. With 87 he sees about 12ish. Now that it is winter time and uses the truck for plowing and letting his truck idle about 7/8 ish with 87

Past 3 tank have all averaged below 12 mpg. Was getting close to 14. Mostly 55 mph with some 65, little to no idling. Only choices here are 87 and 91 octane, no more 89.

The feedback from this thread comes from people all over the country, all with 6.2L engines, but various cab configurations and some with 3.73's and some with 4:30's. Most seem to be 4x4. From what I've read it seems the range varies between 9-16mpg for basically unloaded driving, city and highway. There might be a few outliers of very high or very low mpg, but I think overall from reading this you should be getting about 10mpg city and maybe 15mpg highway.

What I find interesting is the numbers for what my truck gets VS. a diesel.

My truck avgs 13.5-14mpg in the city

The 6.7 seems to be around 16-17

Now both numbers are an avg I know some claim higher and lower in both.

I use my truck for example at 13 mpg even know it does slightly better

13mpg divided by $3.20 for regular gas by me=$.24 to drive my truck 1 mile

This last year I drove 15k miles = $3,750 now that's not a 100% number due to fuel prices..... He'll 2 weeks ago gas was $3.02

For a diesel I see.....

17mpg divided by $3.89 a gallon = $.22 a mile

$.22 times 15k mile =$3,300

Also you have to figure in the def fluid ...

Yeah the 6.2 does not win an mpg contest but its still not worth the diesel $$$$$

.... and oil changes and divide the additional up front cost my what 5, 6 years?

.... and when we had that arctic blast out west a few months ago I asked a guy at work where his truck (gm diesel) was and he said at home. He forgot to plug it in and it absolutely would not start. The is a 2013 duramax.

Look at the fuel gauge and the miles on the tank in the pictures that read 19+ mpg. Any vehicle that early in a new tank will read high. It has nothing to average against. The more miles on the tank, the more it will drop. Show us the same screen when the tank is near empty. I'm sure it's back down. My 6.7L will read 22.5 when I start on a full tank. By 3/4 tank, it starts to show 18-19mpg, but settles at 17-18.

I find it interesting that Ford recommends resetting the fuel economy computer "while already driving with the cruise control on" in the manual. Of course, the vehicle gets its worst economy when pulling away from a stop, generally, so nice of Ford to try and mislead its customers on economy.

Even though my 6.2L doesn't see as good of economy as some of you guys seem to, it is still way ahead of the diesel in terms of cost per mile. The diesel is nice, but only buy it if you are wealthy or really need the extra torque.

For anyone have any idea of what the other two big gas trucks get...... GM and Dodge????

I can not imagine they eat much better if any. Dodge has always been the worst and GM try ks do pretty good. I have always owned 1500 series trucks and one D-Max so I have no clue on a 3/4 ton gas truck.

Hey Smokewagon....... How many miles does the 6.7 go on 1 gallon of def?

I calculated the fuel but could not factor in the def. It seems that the diesel vs gas fuel for fuel is about $.03-.04 cents cheaper to drive per mile. But one you factor in the def it will be much closer.

I didn't factor in the oil changes or fuel filters I was just looking at straight fuel costs.

When looking at these numbers broken down the spread should be the same towing or empty. So it the gasser gets 8-9 towing and the 6.7 does 11-12 it's still the same $.03-.04 cent per mile spread.

So to me the diesel does not make sense for a "money savings" or "fuel savings".

This again is for my use...... Mostly empty driving with my race trailer only weighing 9k

Well today I just passed 500 miles and am on the second tank. The first tank netted my 11MPG according to hand calculating and the "Lie o meter".This second tank around 14 so far. The first tank I was a little more aggressive with the throttle and rpms to around 4000.

I haven’t pulled any weight yet but I am very impressed with this truck sofar. I was a little concerned about some of the reports of lazy throttle and funky shifting but it doesn’t seem to be a problem for me if it exists at all with my setup. Definitely not as powerful as the 6.7 but I'm more than ok with that given its amount of complexity.

Anybody got any tips on rear air bags?

I had an 01 GMC 2500HD 6.0 2WD and it got 12.5 in normal driving, low 15's on an all highway trip. Of course that had a 4 speed auto and 4.10's. Haven't paid attention to how the newer ones with 6 speed trans and 3.73's do.

Also had an 06 2500HD LBZ Duramax. That got good mileage... it was a CCSB 2WD also and averaged just over 17 in normal driving. Nursed 23.xx out of it on a couple of highway trips in a past life.

Sadly the days of a 3/4 ton or larger diesel truck getting passenger car mileage are gone.
