Thought I'd say hello.
Just bought a '96 F250 (460/5 speed/4:10 gears) to haul my Honda 1972 XL250 & my sons CRF50 to places like Bear Creak, Crows Canyon, Wayne national forest & hit some swap meets & truck shows. (bit of overkill, huh? :o)
I work some odd hours during the week, but my weekends are usually free. So, if Ya wanna go riding, go to a show/swap meet or need a hand wrenching feel free to contact me. WARNING- I usually have my 7 year old son tagging along.:-wink Question, why so slow in here? & what happened to the Ohio buy/sell/trade thread? I need a tailgate & spare rim & it would be sooo much nicer to find it locally. https://i255.photobucket.com/albums/...d/P2060080.jpg https://i255.photobucket.com/albums/...e/P9220058.jpg |
You didnt say where your from. I'm in Akron and can probably help with the parts you need.
The for sale thread is currently the 4th thread from the top in the ohio forum. |
Thanks bigwin. I'm a bit below you, near Canton.
Just a bit confused about the Ohio classified thread. Found the closed/archived one with the last post on 12/02/2011. Is there another one I can't see because I'm new & don't have enough posts? Anyway I'll try & PM Ya about those parts if I can figure that out. Can you maybe PM me first? |
welcome to the chapter nice loooking truck you got there.

Got some good & bad news today.
Took her in to Firestone for the lifetime alignment & found out the rear brakes need done [$478.98] the left rear shackle is about rotted off[$434.56] & the rear strap on the front gas tank is broke, the rear tank has a pinhole leak in it. Can't cut off the shackle rivets until the gas tank is fixed.:'( & something about the non-adjustable ball joints needed replaced before they could do the alignment. $1,200 quote not including the tank replacement! x( I'm a glass is 1/2 full kinda guy though & there is some good news... The front brakes & shackles are new & the rest of the front end looks good. Also, the front tanks rear strap looks like it may be a recall notice. Called the dealer to ask, but she couldn't bring my VIN number up on the computer.:-huh Stay tuned. |
Sounds like Firestone is trying to get rich on one job. Find another place quick. Those prices are ridiculous.

Man if you are planing to do it yourself rear shoes and drums will be a few hundred

Buy 1996 Ford F-250 Parts | FordParts.com I'm confident I can do the brakes myself, but those spring hangers are another story... Got under there this morning & took a good hard look at 'em & read the "How-to" thread on this forum. Doesn't look as bad as I first thought, but still a big pain in the ass job that I think would save me a lot of grief to have someone with a garage & lift big enough to put this beast in. Thanks for the parts source bigwin56,:-X22 I'll give him a call. |
welcome to the chapter. to fix the spring hanger all the tools you need are, some tall jack stands, floor jack, 4" grinder with a cut off wheel, propane torch and an air hammer with a punch. pull the leaking tank and cut the rivit heads off, heat around rivits and knock out with air hammer, remove shackle to hanger bolt, bolt in new hanger.

Hey Monkey, He has a shop and does this kind of work, give him a call.

Thanks guys,
I'll call Todd this morning & get a quote. I'd like to try & do it. But the truck won't fit in my garage & the weather, as you know, is nasty right now. Arguing with myself about just having someone else do it. Would sure save me some busted knuckles & frost bite. |
Welcome aboard. I'm in N. Canton, but grew up in Canton. Where abouts in town? I was trying to place you by your picture, but nothing looking familiar.
Shackles aren't hard, if you have an air chisel. No torches required. Did my '95 a few years ago that way. If you're South of Tusc, around 11th and Harrison Ave, try Moodys Automotive: 330-455-8898. Mood and I got back 25 yrs and he won't do you wrong. Stop and tell him Larry sent you. If that truck hasn't had a quick tune up, check a few things. The air tubes going to the throttle body. Disconnect them at the union in the middle. Using a hack saw, slice the air horn thingy off the one side. Leave enough material to clamp the hose back on. Remove the spout and bump the timing up to about 10*. This will add some umph to what is a real lazy running 460. I had a new '96 F350 SC dually back in the day and just these two things really helped it out. If you need pricing, call Napa South(the old H/H on 15th St south) and ask for Charles. He will do his best also. Moody, Charles, myself and a few friends used to ride our quads at Bear Creek and Elson Street. Been a few years though, just don't seem to make the time anymore. More like we're getting too old for that crap LOL!!! |
Freightrain,
Small world... a long time ago, I worked in the H & H machine shop on Wise rd. Grew up in Jackson & now live in Plain township. Used to ride dirt bikes where the truck stop & the Strip is now. Can't believe how much that whole area has built up & turned to *****. Sorry, I digress.:o Thanks for the info. Definitely have to do that throttle body/timing mod along with a high flow exhaust & maybe under drive pulleys. |
Oh man.............back in the mid 80's I lived at the North store. Ol Jim Green hisself!
Gary, Geno(passed away a few years ago), Old Bob, Jamie(down at south store now), JD(down at south store now), and Craig Betz was my parts connection. Man, I paid for quite a few bricks on that front wall!!! LMAO!!! Built a few motors on "Craig credit"(buy now, pay later). Those were some good times. Rick was the man in the machine shop, can't recall the older white haired fellows name?? Small world! |
Oh, just did the balljoints on buddies '03 F250 4wd(straight axle, not independent). It's not for the faint of heart, the worst part is getting the old joints out of the spindle. Had to take it to buddys shop and use the big press. There was no way we were going to hammer them out!! Other then that, it's a simple driveway job. Did my '89 2wd a couple years ago and they came out with a hammer.
They are adjustable. Ford uses a offset shim with a "key" built in. The key locates in the spindle so it can't turn. They use one that gets it close and that's it. Grind the key off the shim and rotate it to adjust it. My '96 F350 ate the LF tire up bad. Had Nimons alignment do it back in '97. He ground it and readjusted it. No problem. Nimons is closed, I use Toms Alignment on Tusc, behind Rankle and Ries. Ya, the days when the Strip wasn't there? Yup, when Macks welding was up on the top of the hill and nothing but a Dairy mart at the corner of Portage and Frank. Back in the days I went to Stark Tech(now Stark State). |
