Welcome to the chapter guys.

Luke76 01-29-2012 10:40 PM

Hi guys! So sorry it took so long to post here - I'm on FTE every day it seems like but I missed this thread somehow, my apologies.

I've also been following the BS thread but I haven't posted anything yet, just getting a feel for who everyone is, etc... Guys, I'm not sure I'll be able to post good morning every day! I can hardly remember to brush my teeth every day.

But anyway here I am. My name is Luke, I'm from Kansas originally, but I've lived in Oregon for about the last eight years. Pretty nice out here, don't think I'll be leaving anytime soon. I work for the state as a data analyst and my wife is a grad student at OSU.

As for the trucks - I found FTE forums only recently after I purchased the F250 you see below. I have been wanting an early 80s Ford pickup for about as long as I can remember. I've been looking for just the right one for about the last four years, as I wanted something rather specific and these are not that common anymore still in good shape. Finally came across this one last month for sale out in La Pine and I snatched it up. It's rough around the edges and needs a lot of work but for the age it's in great shape. I plan to do a full restoration but presently I live in an apartment so there are limits as to how far I can go just now. The truck has 160k miles on it, a 460 V8 (which must have been swapped in at some point because the VIN shows it came from the factory with a 351). It was used to haul wood and given that it was out in eastern Oregon was more full of dust than any vehicle I have ever seen in my life. I am in the process now of completely re-doing the interior.

Behind the F250 you can see a red Ranger, that is also ours. It's two wheel drive and I hardly count it as a truck in the real sense but it has been a very handy vehicle for us in many ways. But it was always a disappointment on rougher terrain and I have gotten it stuck in a ditch more times than I care to remember. I'm glad to finally have something a bit bigger and with four wheel drive.

For the longest time I thought I'd never find my dream truck in real life so I'm also posting some photos of a model I built once as "the next best thing." Aside from working on cars, building models is my other hobby (yes, it's RC).

I really gotta change the grill on my full size, I want the stock look, but it came with that aftermarket billet thing. I'm pacing myself though, for the sake of my wallet, so for now it stays on there.

Luke

I hope you forgive me for going a bit off topic, but I just had to post one photo of my other pride and joy, a 76 Granada. It's not a truck but it is a Ford! I promise I won't mention it again, but I couldn't resist! :-X04 I have been working on this one for the past couple years.

Welcome Luke! Love the pics of the model! Looks like ya got a good truck from over here in the desert too!

We're a lot more "loose" here in the Chapter, so nothing is ever "off topic"....................lol

Luke76 01-29-2012 11:52 PM

Ha ha! But don't get started on guns unless you really want to get off topic!

I've done a lot of complaining about our Ranger, and my wife has had to put up with a lot of my belly-aching about it, since we bought it from her father, a person of whom I have had some disparaging things to say about his choice of cars (I'll give him one thing, he is a Ford man, but maybe not a very good one). At the time it was the only vehicle we could scrounge up to help us move our stuff from Kansas to Oregon.

However, the truth is it's been a good vehicle and has only gotten me in trouble when I've taken it places it never should have gone. I've used it for off-roading simply because it has the most clearance of the cars we own, and back in my naive days, I used to think: "Hey! This thing is a truck, right? I can go wherever!" But alas two-wheel drive with an empty bed and you definitely can NOT go wherever. That doesn't mean I haven't tried! But I've probably learned to be a better driver because of it. And I've been able to give our local tow companies some good business.

Anyway, we've had some good times with this truck in spite of its shortcomings. One of the first things my friends asked when I bought the F250 was if the Ranger was for sale. But in fact I think I'm going to keep it around for a while longer!

Just so you know I love my Ranger, here are some photos I scrounged up from over the years...

The Ranger is great for carrying large boxes sideways.

http://publicphotos.ishouldntwonder....29/Ranger7.jpg
It can hold a lot of stuff...

http://publicphotos.ishouldntwonder....29/Ranger6.jpg
And a lot of models

http://publicphotos.ishouldntwonder....29/Ranger4.jpg
(Ok, those didn't all come out from the back of my one truck...)

http://publicphotos.ishouldntwonder....29/Ranger2.jpg
Great for camping on level ground!

http://publicphotos.ishouldntwonder....29/Ranger3.jpg
Tailgate makes a great secondary kitchen table

http://publicphotos.ishouldntwonder....29/Ranger5.jpg
You can even drive it in the snow! If you don't mind digging it out of the ditch every few miles...

Old93junk 01-29-2012 11:55 PM

You Ranger bashers beware............I bet I have been places in my 4x4 Ranger that would make a full-size tremble with terror!

Seabiscuit-P3 01-30-2012 12:16 AM

Are you reminding us you drove it in Eugene?:-missingt

I was talking terrain wise..............not hostile territory!

Yes, it has even survived driving through downtown eugene!

Luke76 01-30-2012 12:53 AM

Eugene, yikes!

But at least they have a Cabelas now! (Or is that Springfield?)

We have to count our blessings here in Corvallis, they even let us have a run-down K-Mart... and a Big 5 that has a store closing sale every other month.

Seabiscuit-P3 01-30-2012 01:02 AM

Do not ever insult Cabelas :-dancing1(or Springfield for that matter), they may be spendy, but they do not deserve a bad rep............they are in Springfield! (not that other place.........sorry my keyboard is refusing to spell the name)

joe_13894 01-30-2012 02:16 PM

It is spelled "spewgene" and is thee home of the ucks.

Unfortunatley that particular one wasn't mine, (mines pertier), it belonged to the government when I was still a sniper and a member of the MTU/National competition team. It was an M14 converted with a Douglas super match barrel, trigger, NMC 1/8 moa sights and mounts for a "special purpose" scope or an AN/PVS 6 NV scope. They also issued a special gun vault that had to be bolted to the studs in the house before I could bring it home. Had to give it back a few years ago when I retired from doing all that stuff. Free BB's dried up too.:'(

I see that a proper Welcome has already been done here....
Welcome to the Chapter from the North Oregon Coast

Nice collection of guns and trophies! Losing free BBs would make me cry too... it makes me cry just to buy them.

The John 02-16-2012 09:27 AM

Good Morning,
Sorry for the late introduction as I am still poking around the different forums.

My name is John, I have a 1977 Ford f150 Super-cab 2wd. It was my grandfathers truck and it is an import (Canada). It has been in my family for a long time, on its second motor now and soon to be a third. This is mainly a hunting/camping/towing vehicle for myself. I have taken it all over the state from diamond lake to french glen to prairie city etc.

Its nice to meet you all, and I hope to contribute regularly.

Nice Guns... I love older guns they have so much history, and shooting them is like driving an old car (in a good way).

fabmandelux 02-16-2012 09:32 AM

Morning John, and welcome to the chapter! Nice looking dentside! Looks like your granddad took great care of it!

kjvforme 02-16-2012 10:17 AM

Welcome nice to see someone post up, it's a good idea to have the Main Oregon Chapter and the BS thread bookmarked. Nice truck, hope to see you in the BS section.

Seabiscuit-P3 02-16-2012 11:37 AM

Hey Dave, he said Diamond Lake, The John said the majic word......Diamond Lake. Best fish in the state at Diamond Lake.

Oh, and nice dent side too. I used to have a 78 Ranger until the Peoples Republic of Eugene executed her.

The John 02-16-2012 02:44 PM

I love Diamond lake, its a great drive as well. Waldo lake is great too, if you dont mind being carried around by mosquito's....:)

Used to just about live at Diamond Lake. Waldo is a pretty big lake with some hefty boating restrictions, although I see some work being done on that. Odell is great if you like Kokes and Lake Trout. Dave can probably give you the names of every fish in the lakes and their genealogy.
Used to do both on a regular basis. Since we moved back home from Winchester and my wifes health took a turn, we concentrate on Diamond Lake vactions and one or two two day trips. Spend a lot of two dayers up at Detroit just cause its so close. And of course there is the Salmon and Halibut out of Newport.

Don't let the secret out!!!!...........if you can stand the mosquitoes, the fishing in the lakes around Waldo lake is fantastic.
I refuse to get specific about names of lakes or direction here, no one likes having their secrets overrun by strangers.........( PMs are OK) God bless the mosquitoes!

The John 02-17-2012 08:48 AM

While I like to fish for trout, I love to fish for salmon... You can beat a 20pd spring Chinook in May or a bright chrome blood red meat coho at buoy ten in August.....
While I like to fish in general, hunting is my real passion..... but that's a whole nother story... :)

Seabiscuit-P3 02-17-2012 09:12 AM

I was right with ya, right up to the bouy 10 thingy. I'll stick to Depoe Bay, Pacific City and Newport thank you. Bouy 10 is for those who are too young to have found their marbles yet or a coast guardsman in training.:-missingt

The John 02-17-2012 02:51 PM

I hear you, Bouy ten is... well interesting.... But its a good time. Its a guys weekend for me.

I love launching out of Depoe Bay.... Something about a pre dawn launch, going under the bridge into the waves, and gunning it once outside to see the lights going away fast............:-X22

Plus all the nice ling that like to hang out around there..... :9

Seabiscuit-P3 02-17-2012 05:44 PM

Cousin has a big boat he moors at Depot Bay. I really haven't done Depot Bay in the last 4 or 5 years in my boat. The short story is that after leaving on a wonderfully clear and glassy smooth morning, my son and I ended up on the middle reef off of North Lincoln City. Advance 4 hours, Seas started picking up and fog started rolling in. Decided we had better head back. As we came up on Boiler Bay, USCG restricted Depot to 25' with full electronics. (I'm 20', no radar) Seas still building so I talked to the CG on the radio and ended up heading for Newport. 0/0 visibility when we got there. Followed the GPS all of the way. Almost hit the #2 bouy so we decided the GPS was certainly accurate. Got across the bar about 5PM and ran out of gas (in tank - had two full 5 gallon cans up front) just as we were pulling up on the boat ramp peir at South Beach and glided in.:-X18

Then I had to call the wife and she had to drive over from Sheridan, pick us up and take us back to Depot Bay to get the pickup and trailer. Done Newport ever since. Doesn't make sense to use Depot Bay anyway since we spend a lot of time fishing in the area of the North and South Piles. Good spot for lings off Boiler Bay though.
