wheel well curiosity
 

Hello All, Would it be possible for someone to tell me the reason the wheel wells in the bed of my 60 F100 are different shapes ? The well on the drivers side has a factory indentation on the front side, I see no reason for it. Thanks, Mark

Do you see any indication of a spare tire mount inside the bed near that location?

The indentation is for the spare tire, the bracket to mount it was bolted to the bedside in front of the fender, so there should be 5 holes in this location.

The L/H spare tire mount was an extra cost option available for all Flareside pickups thru 1979.

while we are talking about wheel wells can we talk about front fenders? Why do some F250 have the wide lip on the front fender and some have the narrow lip? I figured the F100 had wide and F250 had narrow but i believe i am now wrong. I have seen F250 with both styles, and I think GB has the wide on his F250. Whats the deal?:-hijacked

Mark, if I understand what you're asking, a truck with a larger wheel-well opening would have a smaller lip.Reason:Larger optional wheels on the 3/4 ton and up trucks needed larger openings in the fender to accommodate them.My truck had larger wheels,which I s**t-canned.The tall, skinny 19.5" were ordered because the original owner ordered his "retirement vehicle" to travel with a cab-over camper.Without the weight of the camper,those skinny bias-ply tires were so squirrelly , I could't abide them.Plus replacements were expensive,even back in 1997.

Mark; it's my understanding from reading the illustration/parts catalogs, that on B & F250 and up if you had 19.5 or larger tire and wheels the truck came with the thin fender lips.

thanks for clearing that up for me guys and sorry for hi-jacking the thread. i quess mine was born with the big wheels, or at least 17.5s. Bill, you wanna see if you could order me a left and right side? jk. Bad thing is, i have not seen patch panels for the big opening. gonna have to keep looking for good fenders. Thanks again!

No joke: There's a NOS pair at a truck dismantlers here in LA LA Land. Col. Flashman and I were there a coupla years ago, he spotted them...said, "someone prolly needs them."

Couple of things still mysterious.... Y-o-Y are you talking about a styleside or a flareside? I was thinking you were asking about an indentation on the fender well on the inside of the bed. I might be mistaken and I have never seen an 'inside the bed' spare tire mount other than owner built. Could you clarify or better yet a photo? As for fender lips mine is an f350 and I think it has the wide. When I bought it it had 17.5s so most likely someone changed them out, probably to get away from the WM wheels. I can't recall seeing a truck with the narrow fender lip, but of course before I bought mine in September I wasn't looking. One more thing while we're still talking about spare tires, does anyone have a picture or drawing of that factory flareside spare tire mount that Bill mentioned? I'd like to build one.

I've been hitting this yard since 1967, knew the fenders were there, but wasn't interested in buying them (unlike other NOS parts this yard had...emphasis on had!), because there is little to no demand for sheet metal here, cuz no salt on the roads, so no rust.

These fenders are among other fenders (used) under a roof, but are somewhat exposed to the weather, so have surface rust. This yard does not ship, so what I'll have to do is...go there, look at them, ask "how much" then get back to you.

I usually go there every coupla months, and will very soon, cuz another member needs a 1965 anodized grille, and I promised I would check it out, ask how much.

The yard has been owned by the same family since 1929, the grandson now running the place doesn't know one piece of old sheet metal from another, wouldn't know if it fit a Ford or a Nash, so that's why I have to go there, ID the parts and etc.

Sorry, I thought this thread was dead. I was asking about the indentation on the forward end of the left rear wheelwell inside of a styleside bed. Mine has no holes for a mount but having a tire sticking up in the bed right behind the driver sounded right to me. I can post a pic tomorrow.

GB, go to my garage and click on my 63. there is a pic of it sitting in front of my shed and if you enlarge it you can see the factory spare mount with the flareside bed. look and see if thats what you are after. if it is, i can get you better pics and maybe some measurements. y-o-y, sorry for the hi-jack.
