1986 F350 351w heat riser gasket?
 

I can't seem to find any information regarding gaskets for the heat riser. I have a large exhaust leak coming from the heat riser and when I removed it to inspect it seems there are no gaskets? The one end of the heat riser is flat and has a steel on steel seal to the manifold, and the other end of the heat riser has a machined donut shape that clamps to the pipe with the two bolts. None of these had gaskets and when I cleaned up the surfaces on the mating parts and reassembled the leak still happens. Is there supposed to be gaskets on both ends? Thanks

The flat part has a gasket. I got a replacement at a Cole Muffler shop

I don't have any pictures, but it has a vacuum line running to it, with a butterfly valve inside. Bolts directly to the manifold on the drivers side. I took a pic from rockauto of what the new part looks like.

It just seems odd there is metal to metal connections to seal the exhaust. I am used to seeing some kind of donut or gasket. If anyone has links or part numbers to the gasket I need, that would be awesome. Maybe there is some kind of gasket maker I can use?

Yes, I thought it odd at first, too, the first time I ever saw a connection like that.

I can't comment on this specific application, but it wouldn't surprise me if that device was designed to not use any additional gaskets.

I tried looking in the parts book but wasn't sure what you were talking about (people use "heat riser" for a lot of things) but let me se if I can find anything useful in there......

OK, found it in the FoMoCo 1980/89 Light Truck Parts Catalog, doesn't look like there are any gaskets installed with that device (so I would merely clean everything up good):

Heat riser. Ford has been using that ball type connection for years. As far as the flat part gasket. 31512 might be the NAPA number. If I was closer (600 miles away) to my 86 I could come up with the Cole number.

I might be wrong on that part number. If you go back to the Rock Auto cat. and check out exhaust manifold gaskets it shows a round and a flat with ears and bolt holes, I forget which one I used between the manifold and heat riser.

Heat Riser
 

When mine was leaking, it was not from the joint, but rather from the end of the butterfly shaft. there is a bushing that is supposed to be in there, it was GONE, and the exhaust was leaking out of the pivot hole. I had to replace the valve. That cured the leak!
