ford project

I bought this 93 ford f150 on a 80s bronco frame. it has a 460 in it and its sitting on 38.5 boggers. the owner before me cut out the cross member to get the 460 to fit. I just put in $2300 in front end (it had the death wobble) also got all 4 tires balanced. so ? is should I weld in a new cross member or bolt one on?

Have you got a picture of the underside that show's what was done. 80s must have a different frame than a 79. I had a 460 in my 79 bronco for about 15 years and all i had to do was make some mount adapters and bolted it in. Everything else fit like it was factory assembled. Not seeing your frame makes it hard give advise and feel like it was the right advise.___:)___JIM

Yea ill take some pictures tomorrow. Basically they cut the cross member out cause it was in the way of the oil pan. Also they welded in custom motor mounts. when i turn the wheel the frame twists.

Did they use a front sump pan? I used one for a 460 that went in a 76 F-250 4x4. At the time i did it i bought a kit though ford parts. It had the pan, rear sump pump set up,dip stick, ect all just bolt on. All new parts and i never had to go around to the salvage yards. I later, last month, put the 460 in a non 4x4 and sold it . kept all the change over parts to do some trading or swap meet selling this summer. Like to see what they did to your frame,i don't know if it is like the 79 or not,i'm thinking it's different.

P.S. added this, I think you will need to put something across there to keep it from giving you trouble. Maybe leave the mounts as they are if they are working for you and just add some kind of cross member, if you have room to keep the twisting out.

The sump pan is in the back. theres about 12inch between were they cut the cross member out. Iam thinking I mite be able to just bolt a section of 2x1 box steel in. told bolting it in would be better so i could get to the oil pan if needed

I think the idea of bolting the crossmember in is the way to go. One inch by Four inch channel should work too. I'v made a lot of trany mount crossmembers from it. I used some about a 1/4 in thick ,or your idea sounds good too.__:-wink__JIM

There's different ways to do it but i never had any good luck from any of them until i became a paying member, then they were real easy. I click on "manage attachments"it brings up a place i can use to get them off of my pictures album i have online. Like i say ,there are other ways, but that works for me._JIM:)

Sorry ,i can't help on that. I suggest you go the the forums listings and drop down to the transmission and rear ends forums . Then go to the F-series forums from 78 up to 88 ,in those years at least. There will be more guys on there than the projects forum i believe.Good luck,___:-wink___JIM
