Pet Peeves
Thought I'd start a thread on this because we all have them. It doesn't have to be truck related. Let your inner Grinch shine.
I'll start with one that is thread related. I HATE when peeps start a thread entitled something like "My truck stalls at stop signs, PLEASE help". Or "running rough at idle what gives". :-X19:-X19:-X19:-X19:-X19:-X19:-X19:-X19:-X19:-X19:-X19:-X19:-X19 Freaking TUNE it already. And if you don't know how, then LEARN. It drives me nuts that they don't have the initiative to find out for themselves and want other folks to fix it for them. OK I'm fine now.:) Peace on earth, good will to all.:) |
Agreed Marc.. I understand the guy starting a thread such as What is the proper way to Set the timing, or how do I adjust an edelbrock carb? but really, all of this can be found on Youtube with 5 minutes spent searching Youtube or even google. But I think the greater problem is that with so many TV shows such as overhauling, and inside West Coast Customs,, people see those shows and think they can do the same thing themselves.. WITHOUT the benefit of the basic mechanical training or knowledge, that so many hot rod hobbyist have already earned. Basic Mechanical knowledge is a good thing to have before buying a classic, or antique Vehicle... but it seems so many just fly headlong into these projects with out any knowledge... I have a Neighbor who Purchased a 52 Chevy last year, and has spent a fortune repairing it, way more than it will ever be worth, because he knows nothing about cars... He just wants to drive the car he learned to drive on as a kid, and take it to car shows. He has spent over $50,000 and it still runs poorly at best.. the new paint and bodywork has bondo lifting in many places, and the paint already fading.... he put the interior out of a modern Caddy in it, and it looks hilarious... My son refers to him as the old fool and his car as Frankencheby! Ah but it is his choice to Pee away his money!

It amazes me how many "MECHANICS" that work in shops have to rely on OBD codes to figure out what is wrong now.... I had a 94 Ranger, a few years ago that had blown a head gasket, it was the 4.0 V6 I took it to the dealership to have them verify which bank it was.. after 2 days they told me I had a Bad Mass airflow Sensor... Really? wow it is brand new, and that doesn't explain the coolant pumping out of the tailpipe... they wanted $600 to change the MAS I told them to put it back together .... I brought it home, pulled the heads, had them milled, and installed a new gasket set... to the tune of $300 and a weekend... The "HEAD MECHANIC" told me the OBD didn't show any head gasket issues... but exhaust was pouring out of the radiator, and coolant out of the tail pipe.....My Vehicles haven't seen a repair shop or dealership since. other than tires, alignments, and smog tests. Our new mechanics are computer programmers!

How about a truck parts company (LMC) that sends you a catalog for 67-72 Ford trucks, and calls the flareside a stepside? Or, an even better one, back when I owned a 1990 Firebird, I took it to Midas to have the muffler replaced, and they wrote down on the invoice that it was a Chevy Camaro.:-hair

1969: New service writer at Ralph Williams Ford wrote a repair order for a lube 'n oil change for a 1941 Ford that had come into the dealership, only problem was...
It had big chief Pontiac hood ornament, chrome streaks on the hood/trunk lid, Pontiac nameplates on the hood sides and block Pontiac letters on the hubcaps. The guy didn't last too long after that incident. |
