5.4 rear main seal leaking bad is there a easy fix?

I have a 1999 F150 5.4 auto and my real main seal is leaking is there an easy fix or do I have to pull the motor or trans to fix?

phil6608 11-26-2011 02:04 AM

I think you have to pull the trans to get to it. ):

that sucks for a $5 seal do any of the stop leak products that claim to stop rear main seal leaks work??

ford390gashog 11-26-2011 03:58 PM

Nope, the stop leak products won't help the seal. The only one that may is Auto Rx or Lubro Moly motor oil saver both are ester based and can renew rubber compounds.

dang if its leaking that bad you'll have to pull the tranny like phil said, i had that prob once

Also you may want to take the plug out of the bottom of the bellhousing and inspect to make sure it is the rear seal and not the oil pan. I have been a mechanic for a long time and 95% of the time when somebody thinks their rear seal is out it is just the oil pan gasket. Most of the time a bad rear main will get oil all over the back side of the flywheel/flexplate. I would make sure if i was you before you start tearing into it.
