Sticking Throttle Cables on my 94 & 95 Econolines
 

Hey Everyone, Well I have a '94 E-250 and '95 E-150 V-8's. Last year had the problem with my '94 E-250 and it still happens off and on. Today it happened on my 95 E-150. Driving and stop lights and the throttle sticks open with engine racing !! Brakes full on and still wants to keep going. The cables seem to stick since when you reach down near the pedal the little nub end is slack and not moving in and out. I know I am not describing this to well but please bare with me. It has gotten cold here in NY and am wondering if there maybe water or such in the cable freezing or rubbing to prevent the cable from moving completely. On the '94 I sprayed silicone and it seemed to help although it has happened a few times since. It seems these 2 vans are mirror images as far as repairs go. Last 2 months the front steel brake lines went within weeks of each other. Fuel filler hoses cracking within months of each other. I really need a good answer to my sticking throttle though. I am in a wheelchair and it scared the crap out of me!! Is replaceing the throttle cables a hard job ? Is there and easier way to check and resolve these cable problems? Any help would really be appreciated since I need these vans to get around, preferbly safely. Thanks:-roll

Suggest you look at the shaft for the butterfly valves in the throttle body.

For lubing stuff like this I've been using synthetic oil in a traditional pump oil can, instead of aerosols like WD/Liqwench.

You can expose the big brass butterflies pretty easily by removing intake tube at TB. Check if the shaft is binding. Put drop of oil wherever you find shaft meets casting.

Thanks for the responses Club Wagon and Bbasso. Well my brother and I spent the day taking apart the throttle bodies and cleaning them both. They were really gummed up and we could actually feel the binding and sticking of the butterfly's. We used throttle body cleaner and then a few drops of liquid wrench to lubricate. The cables were sprayed and now things are tip top. Thanks agian. On a side note there seems to be a little less members offering help. As usual Club Wagon you always pipe in and it is appreciated.
