glasspacks: where to start?
 

Hello everyone.

Truck is a '78 F150 Ranger 4x4 with 4speed and 400 motor. Current exhaust setup is regular dual pipes going to 2 midas mufflers then regular tail pipes coming out behind the back wheels. I would just put the proposed glasspacks in place of the 2 midas mufflers i have on there now.

Would like to switch over to glasspacks for reduced back pressure, better sound, louder sound, and just an overall change for the truck.

I do not want flow master or anything like that, I'm just about set on glasspacks.

I do need some good advice from the experts though. Whoever has glasspacks, where is a good place to buy them, or look at them? What brands are good or bad? How would you reccomend putting them in?

I have a pretty good budget for them so I don't want something really dinky, I would prefer something a little more serious, but not overboard on price.

My advice on glasspacks is to stick with steel can mufflers.

They blow out and are too loud in the first place.

I concur with your opinion about glasspacks. That's precisely why I opted for Moroso Spiral Flows - no fiberglass packing, compact, and they are fully welded steel cans... $54 each at Jeg's. They have a nice burble. Here are pics of the fab work:

Painted w/ a prototype cardboard exhaust tip... eventually made the exhaust tip outta sheet metal. It exits in front forward of the right rear tire.

I'll be the odd man out here....

I put glasspacks on my truck about a month ago. I had a set-up similar to the one you described, dual pipes going into 2 off brand cheapo quiet quiet mufflers. I put 22 inch thrush glasspacks in place of the off brand mufflers - great sound, not too loud at all, very quiet at idle and as long as you run pipe out from under the truck it's pretty quiet inside the cab as well. The longer the glasspack, the quieter they will be. Only con is, like mentioned above the fiberglass packing will eventually blow out and they will be louder. Mine are fully welded steel, and they have a really good sound, deep and mellow, not really loud and raspy at all. I paid 17 bucks each for them and I couldn't be happier with the outcome although it is only a temporary setup. I'll throw up an exhaust clip for you tomorrow.

I am getting those same mufflers. What size are yours? Do you have a video of it running?

i have a 400 in mine with hooker headers and exhaust and i went with 12 inch cherry bomb glasspacks. at first they were really loud but now they actually got quiet once they broke in. they are quiet in cruising speed and idle speed but once you crack it down they cackle. i am very happy as of right now with them cause you can have a conversation and if you want to rap them out all you have to do is hit the accelerator a little and let ppl know where you are at. btw mine exit behind the wheels.

They aren't glass packs but I would check out some Hooker Aero-Chamber mufflers. They are a straight thru design, they sound great and are built like a tank!:D They aren't real cheap but they also aren't the most expensive either.

But if you want glass packs they are pretty much all the same. Cherry bomb, Thrush, Flowtech Purple Hornies or Red Hots, etc. Just order the length and pipe size you want.

my dads 76 (w/460) has dual 2 1/2" and each has a really long patriot glasspack, they are like 36" long and it has a really nice, low, quiet tone. but like you said they too will blow out, but so far they have at least 5 years on them!

If you do go the glasspack route i'd go with a perforated core and not a louvered core, the perforated core doesn't blow out the fiberglass packing like a louvered core does, and they're more free flowing as well, i'd recommend 24"-30" in length, it's not too short as to sound obnoxious but you'll still get that classic glasspack "rumble".

I have headers and Cherry Bombs on my 360, exiting in front of the rear tires. I threw it together without a lot of research and it was cheap and sounds mean. If I were to do it again, I think I'd spend the extra money on Flowmasters so I don't have to shout at people across the cab. Also, my glasspacks are about 20" after the headers. I'm sure where you mount them makes a difference too.

To reduce the amount of interior noise, locate the mufflers/glasspacks behind the cab to reduce sound vibration and, perhaps more importantly, the exhaust tips need to project beyond the body line.

Dumping the exhaust down to the ground under the cab or bed results in the sound waves being reflected back up into the bed and actually results in slightly higher noise levels.

Well I'm another person that likes Glasspacks! I have dual 44" (yes, 44") Blue Streak on burt and I love the sound! He's had them for 27k miles also and no blowouts our problems so far... Of course now that he is for sale they will blow as soon as someone test drives him!:)

Go with what ya want I say! ... but always get opinions and ideas...
