Toyota p/s with a 460
 

Anyone used a Toyota p/s steering box with a 460 in an F1-3?
I'm trying to keep the drivetrain low but have header clearance problems.
Anyone figured a way?

Can't find the link where I saw it....

The general idea is that you cut the web on the frame rail and weld an offset box to move the steering gear to the outside and inch or so.

What about moving the engine over an inch or so to the passenger side? Is the F1 frame narrower than the '53-'56 F100s? Can't imagine trying to run a Toyota box with a 460! It was tight enough with the FE and I'm not sure which engine is wider! I didn't offset my FE but hindsight says i should have... I'm pretty tight to the box in my '56.

F1's frame is two inches narrower overall in the engine bay than the '53 and newer.

If they make headers like that for a 460 I might be ok.

The car manifolds on the 460 fit pretty snug to the block. The manifolds i have on my FE are garbage. Pretty much like crappin through a coffee straw. They have no flow to them what-so ever hence why they are nick-named 'log manifolds' as they are no different than a simple 2x4 chunk of wood with holes in it. If i could run headers, i would in a heartbeat. Best thing going for them is that they have a 2.25" outlet versus the 2" outlet you ypically find on the FE manifolds. The 460 manifolds are typically 2.25" outlets with the truck manifolds being the exception being 2.5". Probably be a trial and error situation... i know they do make block hugger headers for the 460. Can't remember the manufacturer, but I do recall seeign a set or two.

I found this link that discusses the trials & challenges of fitting headers onto a 460 in our trucks - maybe there is some information that might help. I know Sam (Sdetweil) spent a lot of time researching the different header options before finally going with customs to get it all to fit on his '55.
