Ecoboost for swap?
 

Hi,

A few questions on the ecoboost 3.5.

Anyone know what it weighs?
What tranny's are available? Manual?

Have the ecu's been cracked?

Are the engine and tranny ecu's separate or combined?

How tunable is the tranny?

Here is the reason for the questions, I'm looking for a power plant for a project car, it's a ford Anglia van. I was going to go with a Chevy LS1 but I would prefer to go with a ford motor over the Chevy and the Ecoboost looks like a good choice. I guess it depends on the ecu and tune-ability.

I also have a mid engine project that the SHO version may work in depending on what it weighs.

I would look at the new 5.0l. The engine has already been put into hot rods and has a supporting aftermarket as well as from Ford. The 5.0l is a pretty compact engine, is fairly lightweight (444 lbs) and its powerful.

I was hoping the Ecoboost would be lighter than the LS1 at 385Lbs.
Plus with the LS1 I can use the rear transmission for better weight distribution.

Is the new 5.0 all aluminum?

I'm trying to keep the total vehicle weight down to around 2000 lbs so light weight is a must plus a heavy engine in a light car is not the best for handling characteristics.

I'd love to see Ford start supporting the Ecoboost line as a crate engine's...

Yeah the 5.0l is aluminum block and aluminum heads. The 4 cams and related valvetrain can add some weight however listed engine weights can be decieving. A completely dressed turnkey engine obviously weighs a chunk more than a long block with no accessories. I never saw any dressed engine weights for the EB 3.5l however I figure until you add the trubo and intercooler related items the EB will be on par with the weight of the 5.0l.

I'm sure people could make some wicked projects with a EB crate engine. The ecm/electronics just has to be something a builder can work with.

It might be to new to get any aftermarket support, but I can wish...

I just think it is the best new technology that has come out in quite a while.

Hopefully Ford moves into the hot rod market now that Chevy is Government owned and will probably not have any new innovation as long as the Gov is involved.
