1978 Ford Crew Cummins Swap
Hey folks! Kinda new around here. Been reading up on swapping a 12v Cummins into a dent. (Thanks Hardrokn and ChaseTruck etc. for the great build threads!) Here is what I got....
<a href="http://s789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/Higbean/?action=view&current=crewcab002-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/Higbean/crewcab002-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/Higbean/?action=view&current=crewcab007-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/Higbean/crewcab007-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> Grabbed a 1993 Cummins with a 2wd A518 w/ 150,000 miles on it. Plans are to run the auto tranny until it dies and then put in a built Suncoast (or equivalent). Looking for a 1978-79 D60 so I can just bolt it up. Trying to figure out what can be done to get around the divorced tcase. Any ideas? I also have the hydroboost from an Astrovan and I'm hoping to swap in. Upholstery is going in it next week. Just built steps/rock sliders and scrapped the front bumper. Going for a capable 4x4/out of state hunting rig and camping/fishing rig for the family. <a href="http://s789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/Higbean/?action=view&current=ShubertswithAndrea.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy178/Higbean/ShubertswithAndrea.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> |
That's awesome! I sold my regular cab and got a crew cab because I have 3 kids as well. I love the stance of your truck. Keep posting pics!

Pulled the front bumper off. Need to figure out a good way to bolt a new one to the frame. Any suggestions?

http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/y...rgarten070.jpg My crew has 2 captured nuts on the vertical face of each frame rail. Some frames had these - some didn't, but they work well for bolting a plate to the frame and using that to bolt the bumper to. It's where my stock bumper bolted up (or the brackets for it at least) and I ended up using them to bolt my custom leaf hanger to. I will also use them for the front bumper mount on whatever I end up making as well. Pics: Attachment 202702 Attachment 202703 Attachment 202704 |
My kids always sack out in "Crusty" too.:-X04
It is funny to see the frame differences. My 2wd front end looks more like Chases than your's. Your truck looks like any other front frame horns. Mine has the old style bolt on bumper brackets. |

His frame horns look like typical 2wd ones. But, don't even get me started on the frames and bumper brackets thing... Ford did SOO many things SOO many different ways for no apparent reason.
In years of working on these things I've come to the realization that Ford did all sorts of weird things and parts combos on trucks for no rhyme or reason. I took a pic of this 2wd frame section i have because it has front bumper brackets RIVETED on. I've heard people here say 2wds didn't have bumper brackets - only 4wds. I've also heard they were only bolt on. Attachment 202701 |

Well, I'm getting closer to pulling the 460 out on this thing. Got the garage all cleaned up and organized and moved some equipment out of the way. Ordered a 38 gal fuel tank and two boxes of Eastwoods' thermocoustic. Need a few more things (intercooler, divorced 205 etc.) Decided to put a stock front bumper on with a receiver hitch underneath between the frame. I'll start snapping pics next week.
|
Please do. I have put a front receiver on several of my trucks, and I love it. In fact, my crew has one. I used a piece of 6" channel and slid it into the frame. On my regular cab, I cut down a rear receiver, carefully ground the frame horn, and slid it in so it was between the framerails. I had to remove the radiator to do this. There's some pictures in my gallery if you are interested.

Checked out your gallery and got some great ideas. Thanks for posting. I promise to post some pics of my project. Hope to start tearing into it next week.

Yeah, no problem. Everybody has different ideas, and what makes the internet great is that you can get a bunch all in one place and then see what there is and get some ideas.
I really like this project since it is for the family;) It pained me to get rid of my regular cab (my favorite style of truck) but it is even better that I can now take the family with me:-X04 |
