jstnromero 08-07-2011 12:06 PM

Hmmmm...I will be tuning into that one to see what they have to say.

A/Ox4 08-07-2011 01:07 PM

I've seen it before. Its amusing, and entertaining. But dont go into it expecting to learn anything lol.

Remember, it IS TopGear afterall. And the guys arent truck guys, but they do their best. But its easy to pick apart what they did in the show.

I'll try not to spoil it.

BigPigDaddy 08-07-2011 01:54 PM

Is that the episode in Alaska? If so, it's pretty funny what you can do with a pickup that you care nothing about. :-X04

Ian123 08-07-2011 02:22 PM

Trey how did you see the episode before it aired?

Dont ask and I wont have to lie :-X04

A/Ox4 08-07-2011 02:34 PM

They also did an episode where they used cars for truck work. That episode was amusing lol

Gordon-0 08-07-2011 02:48 PM

the alaska one was a while ago.
definitely not new.
im amazed the blue truck made it that far.

That was a really funny episode....poor miata..lol....but the episode on tonight is BRAND NEW...i think in the preview they show a dodge pulling a train.....should be entertaining. Please dont confuse this show with MOTORWEEK or TRUCKS or any other real automotive show, this show is about humor and seeing what they can do for fun...

Well put. This show is not to be factual in anyway. They do sometimes review cars, but when the do their "fun stories" like this its all play no work. Nothing is factual haha

paredneck33 08-07-2011 03:37 PM

i thought it was the 2011 ford pulling the train.

They probably all pulled a train. They usually do the same challenge with all the vehicles.

paredneck33 08-07-2011 03:39 PM

either way you konw these 3 trucks are gonna get the beatting of their life.

Watched it - disappointing really, a bunch of know-nothings doing things that really don't count for much.

Gotta love the part where the one guy hydrolocked the $60K+ desert/sand racer. Right there, I knew the rest of the show was a waste of time, but had to watch anyway.

Yes, pulling down telephone poles with a cable hooked to the top of the pole (or near it anyways). I would have loved to see the aftermath if the cable snapped. Idiots.

I saw another one, where they were comparing a Jaguar XK with like 500+HP and rear-wheel-drive to a Nissan twin-turbo thingy with all-wheel-drive. NO DUH! The Nissan was faster on the twisties. NO DUH! The Jaguar lost the drag race when the idiot driving it roasted the rear tires off the line. Sigh... All that hardware, and not a neuron between any of them to rub together to start a fire with.

Sorry, rant over.

Finally, someone said it. I have watched the BBC version of TopGear for years, and if nothing else it is entertaining. You don't watch it to learn anything, you watch it to see cool cars and jackass-ery.

The History Channel version is the *******, red headed step child. Nowhere near as entertaining or funny, and ultimately a poor substitute. And the 3 hosts they picked are HORRIBLE.

Rant over!! :-X04

Exactly. I enjoy the BBC version over the US version. It really leaves much to be desired. The hosts may be nice guys however they kinda stink at what they do. Its almost like they are reading a cue card when they speak.

Could i do better... well, no.

im just saying.

krewat 08-08-2011 10:00 AM

If any of them understand leverage, or traction, or anything, it's not apparent.

Maybe that's intentional. I dunno :)

krewat 08-08-2011 10:01 AM

Actually, come to think of it, that Jaguar vs. Nissan thing I cited, I think that WAS the UK version of Top Gear. It had a British guy doing all the talking :-X14

But again, even then, who roasts the tires with a 500+ HP vehicle in a drag-race?

bpounds 08-08-2011 11:23 AM

I don't think they are going to hand 3 new trucks over to those idiots. The show doesn't have that kind of budget. They usually have a $1,000 limit on anything they give them to, uh, "test".

The Alaska test was funny when the one guy lost his house camper.

Shake-N-Bake 08-08-2011 12:13 PM

I watched it and thought it was 100% entertainment. The BBC version is great but the US guys are starting to grow on me. Very unscientific testing that doesn't really account for much so take any opinions with a grain of salt. Still a ton of fun to watch what they do with these vehicles.

I cracked up laughing at the burn out contest! That was some of the funniest truck footage that I've seen in a long time. The Chevy couldn't leave any patch at all, the RAM spun the tires for about 25 ft and the Ford didn't stop smoking the duals. He even turned around and did donuts while the guys were standing in the middle of the circle. They ended the segment with the F450's tires smoking off into the sunset. Great television! :-X22

I have to admit that I was shocked the F450 pulled that train. They said it weighed 280,000 lbs. The RAM pulling down the house was pretty fun to watch as well. :) Took a few hard jerks but it came down eventually. The one-liners between the guys were pretty funny also.

olderisbetter 08-08-2011 12:17 PM

It was the F450 that pulled the trains. Not really sure how they knew the train was 280k lbs. since they probably didn't weigh the thing or know the original specs but maybe they did. Either way, the truck pulled it and it did look pretty damn heavy.

It just went to show that American trucks will take a beating far beyond a manufacturers official numbers and claims.

jd1083 08-08-2011 01:03 PM

Yeah you the know the show isn't very factual when the guy driving the Chevy didn't even know to turn the traction control off before trying to do a burnout. These shows are funny but it's painful at times to watch these guys try and act like they know much of anything about cars/trucks.

Yeah, that sort of thing is what cracks me up about that show. Both my wife and I were talking to the TV....'turn off traction control dude..' :) Funny that he thought to try it in reverse and see how that works.

While watching the show I told my wife...."Ya know honey...best value for the buck might be the Ram with the Cummins. It takes a little bit longer to get the job done, but it eventually gets there and it costs $12k less than the other two...." That's when she told me to sit on the other couch because she was about ready to smack me upside the head for having crazy thoughts. :-X19 }>

I'm pretty sure the weight of all railroad units is printed right on the side.

Now THAT is a great woman! :-X22

This is for you :-X19

Just watched the episode and laughed like crazy. The scary thing was the "mechanic" telling Tanner to keep cranking the engine. :-X15 Where'd they dig that guy up?

And between the two of them, they couldn't figure out it hydrolocked?

Yes, and the rolling resistance of steel wheels on a steel track is actually quite low. It doesn't surprise me at all that the truck would be able to pull that. The other day, someone posted a video of a Ranger pulling a steam locomotive.

Hondaonda 08-09-2011 02:53 PM

Just a follow up the Truck used was a 2011 - F450

I had chance talked to a Sr. Manager at ford by chance he has a Boat insured with the company I work for. He said the truck is in LA right now and he was over the project and its getting fixed from all the issues they caused. The train weighed 88k pounds according to him and they smoked the tires after 10 min, so after that they were running on bad tires. He said makes for great TV but thats about it.

Also on aside note he said he was very displeased about the treatment of the truck.

+1. It's actually incredible how easily trains move.

I guess he hasn't seen the BBC version of the show...
I am amazed that anybody gives them anything considering how they treat stuff. The truck test in Alaska last season should have provided a clue as to what might happen.

edjunior 08-09-2011 07:29 PM

Stupidest show I ever watched. If I ever have to pull down a power pole, or a house, I'll know what to get. Good grief!

tsgtbdl 08-09-2011 07:52 PM

top gear show

:-huhI have to agree with you. Maybe they should have used a drag sled from a tractor pulling contest instead of burning off tires, using leverage to pull down the telephone pole and pulling the insides out of a wooden shack. The pulling of the locomotive could be plausible. Don't think I'd try it with my F-250 anytime soon.

galaxie641 08-09-2011 09:53 PM

They let a professional Factory Ford drifter drive their F450 what did they expect. The show is for entertainment only, as already stated. If they really wanted to find something out they would have had 3 identical trucks and pull the same weight up the same hill.

Snowseeker 08-10-2011 09:15 AM

Its a show for comedy and thats it. The guys on the show do know better and do know everything we are saying here but for the sake of the show they act dumb and make it comical.

The driver of the superduty did mention before the drag race that he did own 4-5 superduties in the past.

If you watch the show expecting professional driving of every vehicle you WILL be disappointed. If you watch it for people doing normally illegal stupid things with vehicles and one liners you will like it.

That episode was SOOOO funny. The best paint jobwas "Man Love Rules"! That went over really well in backwoods Alabama.

Barthel isn't your Avatar "the Stigs American cousin" from that episode?
