black discharge on battery

i noticed that there is black discharge all over my battery. Does this mean the battery is going bad?

ford390gashog 08-06-2011 10:32 PM

Never seen any black discharge on a battery acid would turn to a white powder with a green tint on metal parts. Is it maybe battery cleaner or anti corrosion gel?

jdm5630 08-06-2011 11:14 PM

well it looks like dirty dired up oil.

my autozone yellow tops did that right before they died
I had never seen black residue on a battery before either maybe thats why most batteries are in black cases lol

Aren't these sealed batteries? I can't check mine as I replaced it a couple of years ago with a high capacity, deep discharge type usually used in public safety vehicles.

maybe time for a new one then. what would be better, autozone redtop or yellowtop?

Zmann 08-07-2011 10:42 AM

i always get the best warranty most cranking voltage myself

I think at Autozone their yellow top is the best (not to be confused with Optima yellow tops)

jdm5630 08-07-2011 08:20 PM

well i cleaned it off, the terminals were full of that white powdery stuff. But it seems to be cranking fine. but ill get a new one before its too late

Zmann 08-08-2011 12:46 AM

just take it in and get it tested

Mine has the same thing. Many batteries do this. Wipe it off with a rag and some simple green.

If the battery is swelling up then replace it.
