look what I found in my coolant filter!

I was changing my oil yesterday and everything looked fine until I noticed my coolant filter wasn't flowing....humm. Coolant looked fine in the tank....I am running Evans so it has always been dark .

So I picked up a napa filter last night on my way to see Captain America with the wife. Went out to change it this morning when it was nice and cool and noticed some chocolate shake in the filter, So I figured I better cut it open.............

as soon as my ride gets here I am on the way to the dealership to pick up oil cooler rings and gaskets, lets hope that all it is.

 HOLY CRAP!! What coolant do you use?

F-250 Super Duty 08-02-2011 01:07 PM

Wow that's a mess there! Were is it coming from?

PaysonPSD 08-02-2011 01:07 PM

Steve,

I got my fingers crossed for you.

How did the drained oil look?

I have done the oil cooler R&R. It's messy but not difficult.

Steve did say Evans, but that is not the problem.

That milk shake mess can happen from coolant/oil cross contamination due to bad oil cooler gaskets and/or o-rings.

I am running Evans NPG+, 0 coolant pressure is probably what saved me. The oil I drained looked fine... correct amount and after sitting overnight no separation.

I wonder if you didn't have the coolant filter on the system, you would have seen the oil earlier?

Well, if nothing else, the filter was sure doing its job. Hope it's just the o-rings.

That's certainly good news.

Are you going to send that oil in for analysis?

Signs of potassium and/or sodium point toward coolant in the oil.

Makes me really want to do a coolant filter now.

CSIPSD 08-02-2011 01:59 PM

Ouch...

I need to add a coolant filter to Chelseas Excursion as well. Mine has been on for 170k and three motors! LOL

Uh Oh! :'(
I also have my fingers crossed for you Steve.

Here is what my first filter looked like last month. Just coolant and a little sludge. The actual filter was just wet and rust colored. I hope neither one of us is in for a suprise.:-X18

For those of us with out filters, how do we know if this is happening?

Usually.. oil in coolant... or coolant in oil. :-X16

In my EMT class we had a saying:

"Air goes in and out. Blood goes round and round. Any deviation is a problem."

Sounds pretty similar :-X22
