saginaw on a 390
im looking to put a saginaw pump on my 390. all the threads i can find on here for pics or what will work are inconclusive. ive called a few places, and im not paying 400$ for this stuff. if anyone could please post pics of your brackets, im sure me and others will greatly appreciate it.

I thought about the swap years ago , but in the end the stock pump is just so reliable that I kept it!!

well, my stock pump has a crack in the resevoir and i cant for the life of me find the brackets. if no one knows about anything reasonably close, looks like ill be ripping off benchworks steerings design. ill just weld a flat piece to a factory bracket, and notch the end to fit around the waterpump bolts and add another strap. check out the link to see what i might do.

I will likely do a swap to a Saginaw on my 73.
It has the PS gear (and linkages) out of a 79 Bronco but a 76 Ford pump. The Ford pump is slightly underdriven and doesn't have enough pressure at idle.. it's okay once the engine revs. Kind of annoying and in the mean time acceptable. Maybe now is the time to break out the Miller gear and get to work... |

see if I can help you a little bit here --- on my 75 crew cab that has a 460 from a 1980 E350 they used a saginaw pump, it mounts almost the same as the earlier metal resivoir pumps. It has a bracket that bolts to the pump, that you'll have to get from junk yard, then uses the offset piece (looks identicle to the 302 bracket on my 72 with a little more offset) that has two bolts into water pump and one long one into the head and one on the bottom for the slot to adjust it. I now you got a FE but I'm sure the metal resivoir mounts allmost the same? I'll try to get a closer picture tomorrow.

well, i cant find anything on cl and yards around here dont go back too far. looks like ill have to break out the welder and see what i turn up. ill post pics when i get something figured out.

The least expensive way to do it and still get oem quality is to go to the j/y and find an early 80's Econoline van with you size engine. They came oem with the Sag. pump and brackets. Take the hose too. Clean it, take it to the Auto parts and use it as a core and get a bebuilt for like $50.
Good luck. I should add that A1 Cardone made a Saginaw conversion to fit the oem ford brackets. When I bought mine, Kragen O'reilley's was the only one who had any left. They have been discontinued, but some are still around. I paid like $70 for a rebuilt one, and didn't have to pay extra for any brackets. I would do a search on this forum. I had a thread about it. |

That would be an option if 1 Ford installed an FE engine in a van , never did 2 The FE was dead in 1976 Its very easy to adapt all the Ford engines with the saginaw that ran up to the 97 model year as you can simply install these brackets onto a 70's version of that engine. Not so easy with a FE!! To the OP have you considered using a remote resevoir saginaw pump?? Looks very easy to mount on the stock 390 bracket with minimal mods and they can be found pretty cheap on the internet http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/1...ump-front.jpg:) consider getting it used from a chevy astro van if you don't want new!! |
Did some looking!!! This looks like a good idea Saginaw Pump Swap you could customize a remote resevoir unit to fit your needs.

I checked my parts today heres what I found. This is the setup as it came on my 72 302 with metal resivior.
