2010 F-150 Brake Problems
 

I have a 2010 F-150 lariat with 25,000 miles and just recently I have noticed a "chattering or vibration" in the brake pedal when I appy the brakes. When I am going down hill it seems to be really obvious. Any ideas on the best path to take to repair my brakes? Is turning the rotors and replacing the pads a good option? Would you recommend putting on new rotors that are "vented".

I would appreciate any advice!

Sounds like a warping issue.
Turning the existing rotors will alleviate the issue now, but it's likely to return once they get nice and super hot again. Also, your stock rotors are vented. Vented refers to the gap between the two braking surfaces that looks like it has "fins" connecting the two sides. That's a vented rotor.
I think you meant to refer to a slotted/dimpled/or cross drilled rotor. They're nice, but only if you spend good $$$ on non-Chinese made rotors. Cross drilled have a tendancy to crack between the drilled holes, and that's just not good at all.

Lots of good brake replacements out there, for almost every budget. But with any metal...if you get it hot and it cools, it's likely not to retain it's original structure/shape/dimensions. If you are going to replace, make sure you ditch the pads as well as the rotors.

Thank You! may I be so bold and ask you if you have a recommendation for a good slotted/dimpled/or cross drilled rotor? As you can see I do have much experience yet, with the advanced rotors. I would rather change them one and put on a good product versus a cheap product.

PowerSlot seems to be a popular choice on here. Some much more expensive options are the offerings from Baer, Brembo, SSB, etc.
For the money, PowerSlot is a good choice. Paired with some good semi-metallic or ceramic pads and you should be good to go.

With 25,000 miles on it. I'd let warranty take care of it.

Also if you buy cross-drilled rotors I don't think you can turn them can you? Take it to the dealer and let them have a look. I can't believe after only 25k they are fubar'ed?

It's highly unlikely that brake rotors would be covered at 25K miles.

My 2010 Platinum had its rotors turned by Ford under warranty at about 24000 miles. When they re-warped and I asked for new rotors my dealer got it done! New rotors and pads at 32000 miles! They wanted to re-turn the rotors but I politely said "No!". Take it in and see what happens. If they turn them just be aware that the problem may return and if it does.......

i agree its warped and warranty should fix it! and as stated buy rifboy don't let them push you in to something less than you need or want!:-X22

Warranty will turn the rotors for you. Just a little personal experience tip, make sure whoever takes off your wheels, for any reason, they put them back on properly, I.e. Using properly rated torque sticks (for air gun) or a torque wrench. Properly torqued lug nuts can prevent warped rotors and improperly torqued lugs can cause warping.

I'd like to share a similar experience w/ the F-250 PSD's. Many thought it was a warped rotor also. It turns out that the two pins that the caliper slide on get corroded and they stick. So yes the rotor may get hot and warp a bit and make it shudder and it comes and goes. The solution is to replace the pins with new style pins coated for this issue. It seems Ford was/is aware of this issue for the PSD's. So, I'm just saying this may be something to take into consideration before getting frustrated with repeated rotor trims trying to correct a supposedly warped rotor; then to find out it had another root cause.

My correction lasted for about two years. Same issue So I will now get my new pins from NAPA not Auto Zone. Just hedging my bets for better quality this time around. ;)

As you may read my later post on this thread one of my co-workers' solutions was to replace his with slotted rotors and saved a lot by getting them at NAPA vice name brand as Brembo.... One caveat ask to make sure the threads on the new lugs are SAE or Metric ...my friend found out the hard way and had to make a few trips back to the store..lol.....

If the rotors warp, taking metal away will make it warp again for sure, once this happens it's time for new ones, but save money and get it done under warranty first.
