Looking for an old Ford pickup tailgate . . .

Hi all,

This is kind of an oddball request, so bear with me, please.

I am setting up a first office in the St. Louis (first "real" job out of college), and I was looking at different pieces of wall art, and I got to thinking about how attractive those old Ford tailgates are.

I think it would be something neat to put up on the wall of my office, because I have a rather large space to fill, and I think the tailgate would make a great conversation piece.

I was just wondering if there were any old Ford scrapyards or parts junkies out there that had any old, ugly Ford tailgates that they might be willing to sell. I am thinking something 30s, 40s, or 50s . . .

I drive fairly frequently between St. Louis and Washington DC, so if they are anywhere on or close to I-64, perhaps I could pick it up . . .

I'm looking for something that has nice patina and isn't too destroyed beyond recognition. Anyone out there might be able to help me out?

Thank you!

joe, it's a good idea. don't have a gate, but other ideas. consider a grille from the 30'-40's era with a clock in the center. or maybe, if you can, a full nose cut thin. would be cool. good luck.

I'm looking for a '40s tailgate for my truck. Can't be hanging it on the wall...

The tailgate idea is a good idea, I've thought of it myself, I always keep an eye out at the local swap meets for a good one that isn't an arm and a leg. I have a '47 Ford passenger car grille hanging in my garage as art. Vintage car parts make good man cave art. Good luck with your search for a suitable piece.

I have a ford tailgate and a rear fender for 42-47 pickup. I live near Milwaukee WI so you let me know. I am near finished with my 42-47 trauck restore and would like to see these items be used on a truck that will hit the road again. I have a fully restored insturment cluster for the pick up that has been upgraded to 12 volt. I have two sets of window frames and one set of regulators. I also have 2 sets of friction shocks that have been restored as well; Let me know if interested.

The tailgate and the shocks interest me. What would the damage be? I'm not too far away in NE, but too far away to drive. Don't know if the Missouri would let me anyway. UPS shouldn't be too much I would think?

I would like to get $200 for the tailgate and two sets of shocks plus shipping. This is less than I paid for all of it, but I want to see the parts used on a project. I could have them wieghed and get a shipping total for you.You can email me at cdrobka1@wi.rr.com so we can work out the details.

I also have two inner fender panels if anyone is interested. They were dipped and welded and have POR 15 on them.

Jailbar.....

Why do you have better left-over parts that the ones I'm starting with ??? }>:-huh:'(

Like many of the threads I have been reading over the last three years, as I have been doing the build on my 42-47, I have found the process to be a series of design changes between staying with the old and deciding to go more modern. I have been working along side an older gentleman who has built many projects, and following his advice and design ideas so this truck can be a dependable daily driver

I bought the rolling stock without an engine and transmission, and have added a mustang front suspension, a 98 ford explorer rear end complete with springs and shocks, and after market guages to match the transmission and engine that I installed. That is why I have the friction shocks and original cluster for sale. THe inner panels were not needed as we built new ones that helped enclose the engine compartment and fit over the mustang front end like it has always been there.

All the sheet metal is original, having been dipped and brought back to life. Along the way I had been finding parts on the internet, and swap meets.
I tried to save the PU bed, but the repairs outweighed the cost of buying a bed from Northern Classic and assembling/painting it, that is why I have the tailgate. We installed electric windows and that is why I have two sets of window frames

I'll admit that the design changes have cost $, but in the end I know I will be happier with the truck and will be safe going down the road.

I have also found out that the two metal pieces that attach to the radiator support are the key pieces to hanging and aligning the front of this truck, without them you cannot do it, unless you can fabricate them..

We are in the home stretch, last part is to mount the pickup bed, and fit the rear fenders to the bed and running board. I will try to post some pictures soon.

I have a 42-47 tailgate that is a repop. Sitting here in primer. Glad to sell it at a good price to get it out of the way.
