transmission compatibility
 

i have a 52 ford f3 with a 215 ohv inline six with a spur gear 4 speed transmission. i want to ditch the spur gear and replace it with a syncro three speed or 4 speed on the floor. i can guy a three speed out of a 50 f1 with a flathead six but i dont know if it will fit the 215 ohv engine, im told a t95a transmission will bolt up. anyone have any info i can use? appreciate it

I've never heard of a T95A, i think you mean a T98A? At any rate, a 3-sp medium duty trans is your best bet, they are a 3-sp with synchro's on 2nd and 3rd, and are floor shift. The big question is whether it will work with your crossmember directly, or whether some mount modification would be needed. Is the flathead 6 trans a T-86, light duty trans? I don't see that lasting, but if it's medium duty, it would work.

But if you have the crossmember I think you do, you should have room to put in almost any trans you want. You could potentially slide in a more modern 5-sp with OD and full synchro's, but adapters to the engine and clutch would complicate things.

do you know where the transmission is marked---and yeah i did mean a t98a. i have changed the truck a bit, 9" ford out back and f1 parts in front (gotta love 15" wheels). other than that the truck is stock. if that old 215 didnt run so good i guess i would have put in a flathead and a t5 from an s10. i can probably get the 3 speed for a song but i want to know if it will fit before i tear into it. it moved through the gears good and i figure that 100 hp hadnt hurt it. the crossmember looks the same but move measurement is needed.

There is a big difference in the size of the case for the medium duty trans (I don't know the T-number for it). Any '51-'52 Light Duty trans from a truck will be a side-shifter. You should be able to judge the size difference from these. BTW you also would want that rear mount #7085 just barely shown with the Medium Duty.

got a t98 in my 53 and if you can break that tranny you are most definetly doing something pretty da87 extreme ................................. :)

The T98 is longer than the T9 crashbox currently in your truck. You will have to cut the cross member to fit the T98. The heavy three from 42-52, I think T-87, is a much better answer and should bolt in place of the T9.

I would expect an F-3 to have the big "hoop" type crossmember, I would think just about anything would fit without surgery. A pic would confirm.

F2 and F3 transmission crossmembers are different shape than F1 trans crossmembers. Ross is right about the F2/F3 trans crossmembers having a larger opening.

I have a spare regular 3 spd column shift transmission that came out of a 52 with a 215. I'm in CA and you're in IL. Shipping cost wouldn't be too pleasant, but can go by Greyhound.

BTW, look at what I did with my 215 engine. (I like showing it off.) :)

That looks great. Glad to see you got your glass float bowls together. I really like the way the valve cover matches the intake. That intake was sitting in the attic of my garage for ten years! It's great to see it has a good home. I knew I was saving it for someone. Great job:-X22

Not to change the subject, but what became of your backfiring/spitting problems? I don't recall seeing what ever came of that?

I had it towed to the shop that rebuilt the carbs. This was at least three weeks ago. I told them not to rush on it, so it's been sitting in their parking lot (fenced in). I actually had a dream about the truck last week. I dreamt that it was stolen and I found it. Kind of weird.

I'm cleaning around the house and need to empty out one side of my garage so that the Panel will fit once it comes back. Once the garage is cleaned out, that's when I'll start bugging them. I'll update my thread when I have some news.
