NEW ECOBOOST 1.0 ENGINE

Isn't Ford really saying here (that gas prices will rise dramatically in the years to come) with the advent of this engine?

Ford will build a three-cylinder engine -- its smallest engine ever -- with better fuel economy and all the power of a larger one, the company said Thursday.

The new EcoBoost engine, comparable to that found in a cruiser motorcycle, is in the final phase of development. EcoBoost engines will be available in 90 percent of Ford's North American lineup by 2013, the automaker said in a press release.

Ford said the engine is designed to have higher fuel economy and lower emissions than a traditional four-cylinder, without sacrificing power and performance.

The 1.0-liter engine will deliver horsepower and torque outputs equivalent to or better than most conventional 1.6-liter gasoline engines, according to the release.

Recently drivers are opting for smaller engines.

That post was made because this thread started in the 2009+ F-150 forum which was the wrong place from the start.

Pretty small engine, will probably go into the Festiva or some other shoebox Ford comes up with.

Apparently Ford has to boost its fleet mpg average in a few years to meet the requirements set forth by Barry O. Whether people in the US buy them or not is yet to be seen.

In 2009, President Obama announced a new national fuel economy and emissions policy that incorporated California's contested plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions on its own, apart from federal government regulations.
The combined fleet fuel economy for an auto manufacturer of cars and trucks with a GVWR of 10,000 lbs or less will have to average 35.5mpg. The average for its cars will have to be 42 mpg, and for its trucks will be 26 mpg by 2016, all based upon CAFE Standards.[6] If the manufacturers do not meet these standards, they will be assessed a $5 fee per vehicle made for every .1mpg that they're under the standard for.[7]
