tips on fitting Tugger HD2 kit ??

Since the leaking seal issue on my early 99
(see https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-stranded.html )

I've ordered replacement seal kit, TransGo Tugger HD2, Tru-cool LPD4739 MAX and the trans temp gauge.

Truck is going to a transmission place (but not a USA vehicle specialist) so looking for any tips/guides when fitting the Tugger kit.

I'm UK based, so although the shop has done a few Rams, etc the F350 is not something they have worked on.

I've seen the 30 minute vid on TransGo site ref valve body BUT I'm thinking more about the other stuff that comes in the kit, not that I know what else there is???

Ideally I wanted a uprated/modified trans pump & possibly a VB, but after trying to contact a well known 4R100 trans guy I finally gave up chasing and waiting and generally being fobbed off with Bull-shine so have what I have.

I'm on a budget, I know budget and 4R100 repairs don't gel too well but hey, I think what I have will of course stop the leaking when hot and the TRU-COOL will keep temps down anyway

It's not that bad of a job -- are they doing all the work? I did mine easily in half a day in my driveway taking my sweet time, so they should be able to handle this. I did all the mods in the VBs, but since my trans wasn't out, I didn't to the pump mods. Since yours is coming out, I'd do all those mods in the instructions. It looks really complicated, but the instructions do work. Just go one step at a time. Don't forget the electrical connection on the top by the exhaust -- since they're pulling it, it shouldn't be an issue. But doing this with the trans in the truck, you have to KNOW that's there and unplug it before removing the solenoid pack...

The pump mods are just as easy as the valve body mods. Once the pump is out, it's just a matter of swapping some springs and valves. I chose to add the TransGo 4R100 LU (on-off TC lock valve) when I modded the pump. It gives the TC lock up a firmer engagement that feels more like an additional shift.
Be sure and change the bushings in the pump, along with the seal, for added measure.

The two pump case halves need to be perfectly aligned when putting it back together, which is best done with a band clamp run all the way around the pump before torquing the fasteners.

Be sure they use a TORQUE WRENCH on EVERYTHING!!!

I've got nothing to add other than I am going to follow this thread in hopes I can learn more about these transmissions. Hopefully we'll get some pictures of the build. :D

The TC Lock up valve is pretty nice. My wife's truck has the HD 4R100 and there is a big difference between how the TC locks up on my truck compared to hers. Does that valve come in the Tugger kit or does it have to be ordered separately like the 3 or 4 coast clutch?

If there ever is a time when the three of you guys are going to be at an event such as RRW and you want to do a trans build....I am going to book my travel plans early because I don't want to miss that. :-X22

The TC mods come with the Tugger, Greg.

A big thanks for them tips so far, I'll be copying it off for the trans guys to take note.

Sadly I'll not be there to take photos, but they maybe willing to help and supply?

These guys will be fitting everything as I'm pretty naff at tech stuff and WILL break stuff

Tugger kit brought is

The lock up valve does not come in the kit and is purchased separately. I also replaced all 3 aluminum regulator valves in the accumulator valve body with steel versions to prevent sticking.

Yeah I didn't think it came with lock up valve.

The valve upgrades sound a good idea, but too late for me, this is the downside of living in England with a Heavy duty truck, total and utter lack of regular parts supply let alone custom/aftermarket stuff

The steel valves can be done later by dropping the pan and accumulator VB.

Did just doing the VB mods work for you?

I'm not going to remove the trans. either. I have a soft 2-3 shift. I'm just wondering if I do the VB mods only if this should help my problem at all? I have the complete tugger kit but I'm going to hold off on the pump mods until I can remove the trans. It appears that everything in the Tugger mod comes with the HD and shift kit plus a little more. Thanks in advance. Greg
