Oil level question for the 6.0L

I had a few questions for the techs or anyone that might know.

The 6.0L holds approx 15qts of oil with filter.

How many quarts need to be missing for the low oil level light (idiot) to come on?

How many quarts need to be missing for the HPOP to not function properly?

I know this is an odd question but I'd like to know if anyone can share the info....

Thanks

I don't know. I've never let my oil get that low and I'm not about to drain it out 1 quart at a time to find out.

I know it is an odd question, but I was asked today and was curious to find out.....figure somebody here might know the parameters of my silly question...if you find out let me know...thanks

PS....probably not worth running your engine to find out:D

I think the idiot light just lights on when the pressure switch turns off. So idiot light = no oil pressure.

The full capacity of the 6.0L oil system is around 18 quarts. 3-4 quarts do not drain out in the oil change procedure.

The oil pressure switch activates at 5 psig. So, below 5 psig there is no oil pressure on the gauge. I am like cartmanea - I ASSUME the idiot light comes on then .... but I do not know for sure.

I do not know about the "minimum" oil level for the HPOP to function, but I assume that all is needed is for the LPOP to be able to get suction from the pan and flow the 20 gpm it is designed for. The pan holds about 14 quarts, and I would bet you would have to be VERY low for the pump to lose prime and/or be below the required suction pressure.

Awesome...thanks guys. It is interesting to know it holds 18qts total

ya there is no low oil level sensor. only a pressure swich that makes the light come on.
if your to low on oil it wont run anyway.

OK so I have to ask is there a hpop reservoir like the 7.3 ?
The reason I ask is I up-graded this week.....
Sold my 02 & bought a 2007 F-350 SRW CC LB Lariat. Pick it up friday.

Been reading the 6.0 page heavy for the past two weeks and have come to one major conclusion....No tuner!!! & Clock Work PM'S
And a 6.0 will live long & prosper........Am I close? :-X06

cheezit 04-20-2011 09:38 PM

yes sump is under the oil cooler and cast in to the block. the sump itself holds .89qts of oil.

IABill 04-20-2011 10:06 PM

Guess I should have ask the rest of the question can I suck out the res out with my mighty vac & re-fill like I did the 7.3 or is it not possible or not worth doing?

cheezit 04-20-2011 10:08 PM

you can but its a lot of work to remove that oil cooler :)

IABill 04-20-2011 10:20 PM

Got It not gona try that.....
Thanks Cheez!!!

I'm not sure how much this helps, but I vaguely recall working on a truck that was on my doorstep for a massive external oil leak complaint. This particular truck needed about 5 litres of oil top-up just to bring the level back up to visible on the hash mark on the dipstick. The truck started and ran fine. This particular truck had a massive pressure leak that originated from the top of the high pressure oil pump, the moment the engine was started. I guess that explained why it was THAT low very quickly.

Thanks Mchan
