1996 f-150 eddie bauer 5.0 engine tapping
 

at highway speed while on crusise control loose of power and cel flashed then stayed on pulled over visual check okay.restated with what souded like tappet tapping. did compression check all good but #3 had zero compression did air test and decided burnt valve. with 160,000 on motor decided to have overhauled vaulve had over travelled and hit top of piston and dinged it do i have a bad cam or bad roller lifter? reason im asking is problem happened after only 2500 miles on rebuild. And I did not do overhaul. but will do this one and want ideas on where to checkfirst. all help appreciated. i was a diesel mech. in the Navy for 20 years and will find the time to fix it right this time as I love this truck. Too bad ford doesn't have a small Fairbanks-Morris engine in them as am real familuar with them.

I guess I'm a bit confused- or maybe I'm just not reading it correctly.

You're saying that you had a valve over travel and hit the piston, then had the motor overhauled, then had the same problem happen only 2500 miles into the overhauled motor, correct?

If I'm getting this right, to what extent was the motor overhauled, and is there a warranty on the work? If so I'd have the working party fix it- I can't see a warranty expiring after only 2500 miles.

it was early in the morning coffee hadn't kicked in. same problem after a overhaul by a shade tree mech.( I don't have a shop and it was winter time,he was resonablly priced) valve job,oversized rings and new bearings,cyclinders honed. I plan to do the work my self minus the head as i can get it done faster than I can do it. only looking at the cam and roller lifters as the problem unless someone has better plans, am open for suggestions. also the one year time frame for the warrenty had passed.

the one year warrenty had expired
