to get a class A CDL you need to be certified for air brakes. Can't use a pickup for that test.

you can get a Class A without an airbrake endorsement. ...you just can't drive anything that has air brakes.

msgtord 03-29-2011 11:08 PM

That's true. You just don't see it very often.

That would be interesting to see what they do with that you already have your class B CDL endorsement so you already passed your CDL test for air brakes now if the add an A class to your licence would the not have to keep the CDL on it? So in theory youll have a class A CDL

No, that would be a CA driver's license, class D for standard cars. A class A CDL is a commercial driver's license for tractor trailer combinations over 26000lbs gross weight.

Yeah id like to see how this plays out if it works im taking my pickup and trailer to upgrade my class B CDL test would be a whole lot easer:-X04

There is more to it than just the trailer being over 10k. The CGVWR has to be over 26k.

But yes. I have done this as well as many I know.

I thought the examiner wasn't indifferent to it.

No such thing as an air brake endorsement. Makes it real tough to get.

It is actually more common than you think.

Picture any dual tandem GN trailer pulled by a pickup.

Some states will give you an unrestricted class A and some like New York will give you a restriction not allowing you to drive a tractor trailer.

There is even a question answered about just this in the FMCSA interpretation portion of the site.

Let me google that for you

Didn't come up with one did it?

I get a kick out of all the people that throw "facts" around about this subject that don't know jack.:-X19

If a driver either fails the air brake component of the general knowledge test or performs the skills test in a vehicle not equipped with air brakes, the driver is issued an air brake restriction, restricting the driver from operating a CMV equipped with air brakes.
That was my bad, meant to say restriction. Bad habit of just looking at everything on the back of the license as an "endorsement".

Didn't even click the link did you?

I love not being wrong. :-X0A6

It is entirely possible to get a Class A driver's license (CDL or private) without taking the air brake tests. Without taking the tests to show you have knowledge about the operation of air brakes, you cannot operate a vehicle that uses them... at least, this is how it is done in Texas. By passing the air brake knowledge test, you get what is known as an air brake endorsement on your license. It is not very common to take the exams for a Class A license without using a vehicle equipped with air brakes, and thus Class A licenses without an endorsement for air brakes is rare.

Would you like to argue haz-mat endorsements, too?
