Engine oil capcity for 5.4L triton
Alright here it is as info:
opened the drain plug and backed off the filter. Waited a good bit on a warm engine for the oil to drain. Dipstick: hole on either side of the grid. replaced the filter, capped everything, put in jug: (bulk) 5.3 quarts of synthetic Castrol 5W-20.....then 1 quart of same and pulled the dipstick (6.3 at this point): ----- oil-level mark was at top of grid... Then, ran engine for ~10 minutes to fill the filter and let settle....reread and dipstick shows at bottom of grid (add 1 quart). so, added 1 quart.....(7.3 at his point.) Now the dipstick reads exactly between the top of the grid and the top hole. over-fill.....crap.......7 quarts seems to be the perfect amount. (have leveling lift on front) Paul |
Yes 7 quarts is the right amount in the 5.4.

I have been putting in a total of 7.5 quarts of Mobile 1.
That is probably because I put about 1/2 quart in the oil filter to pre-lube it up. Does anyone else do that trick? If I don't do it, I usually get a hard-start and it takes a bit for oil pressure to level off. Tony. |
I put the first 1/2 quart of oil in the filter too, but never exceed 7 quarts.

Thankfully 1 quart low isn't going to KILL the engine and I found it the next day as I always check the Quality of work peformed by Stealership :D So the service manager drove to my house and put the quart in as well as he gave me a $50 off coupon on next service :D |

So True.... but I believe older 5.4 2v's used only 6 quarts of oil.. I know it doesn't apply to owners of the 3v 5.4. But I had a Stealership only put in 6 quarts - Well because they are stupid :-X03...

Motorcraft 5w20 semi synthetic from Wally World(Walmart) is what I personally use but, I think any good quality brand name oil with specs the same as called for in the owners manual will work fine. Do use Motorcraft oil filters as they seem to be better than other filters.
I have to go to the US of A to get my oil as Ford doesn't sell Motorcraft oil other than at stealerships in Canada. :-wink |
