Removing The Wiper Cowl

I want to remove my wiper cowl and paint it satin black to get rid of the ugly fade. Just want to know, is the cowl just held on by clips all the way around that you just pull up on and pop out? Thanks.

Yep just pop the wipers off, pull out the plastic circle plug on the drivers side (might be one on the passenger side too), open the hood, pull the cowl to hood insulating strip off, then you'll see several clips along the front edge (where the insulating strip used to be). I think there's 3 or 4 per side. Push in on them (if I remember right) to release them from the edge, disconnect the washer jets and it will come right off. Might need to raise and lower the hood a bit to get the cowl out. I might be doing this soon too.

Thanks dgndngrngr!

No problem, I just remembered too that there is a bolt in the center which holds the passenger section down. I think its 7/32.

I got it out with a 7mm. Fit on there pretty snug. But either way thanks for the tip!

That sure sounds easier than the '92 I used to have. I think the hood had to come off to get the cowl off on that-was a serious pain to change out the wiper motor. If it's that easy I'll be pulling my cowl off to paint soon.

I love this site.I plan on doing this when the weather warms up and was wondering how it came off as well.

dgndngrngr84 03-25-2011 08:31 PM

Yeah I just did mine too. I was going to do the plastic caps on the bed rails too until I read about removing them on here haha. I'm not that ambitious. They're aren't faded as bad as the cowl was anyway.

They're easy to do already had mine off, nothing to it

My 04' F-150 was fading pretty bad, so I masked my windshield off, & rattle can sprayed it with satin black bumper trim spray. What little bit of over spray that I got on my windshield came off with a one sided razor blade. At the time, I didn'r know it was so easy to take the cowls off. Next time I'm gonna clear coat it! Looks brand new now!

this is probably a stupid question, but how do the wipers come off? I haven't really looked. This might be good info to know for the future.

There is a small metal tab on the wiper itself where it connects to the circle gear thing/motor. Use a flat head screwdriver and push that tab away from the wiper (wont move very far probably 1-2 mm). Once you do that fold the wiper where it bends and pull straight off.

Thanks Guys

I love this forum too. Thanks for the advice. Installed a new set in about 30 minutes. My only comment - the bolt holding on the passenger side piece is 9/32". But you were really close.

Thanks, y'all - first post here. I was able to use these instructions to access my wiper fluid system to clean it and fix a plugged hose/nozzle. I appreciate it.

Mother's 'Back To Black'.

MothersŪ Back-to-BlackŪ Heavy Duty Trim Cleaner Kit

I'm going to get this and try it. My truck only has 15,500 mi. but it sits outside, and most of the trim is starting to gray. I also get some kind of fungus on some of the rubber parts that pits the rubber. I'll use a Scotch Brite pad to scrub with the 'Back To Black'.
