Power steering hose problem
 

Hey guys, I am trying to put a new pressure hose on my 78 F250 4x4. It has the Ford pump on it, but I can't seem to get the right hose. I ordered a hose from NAPA it is for a Saginaw pump and is the only hose they list for this truck. I ordered one from another supplier and had the same result. I am in dire need because the fitting on the pump end is broken so the truck is parked. Anyone got any thoughts?

You can take the old hose to a hydraulic shop and have them make the right hose.

IIRC, the last year with Ford pumps with Saginaw boxes for these rigs was 1976.

2x with Mike... bring the end fittings to a hydraulic shop and then can fab up a new hose. My guy installed them loosely so I could fit it on my rig and correctly clock the fittings before they were crimped.

I had a similar issue when I swapped in my 351W. I kept all the equipment that was on the engine, the PS hose hook up was different in the donor vehicle than it was in my '78...I took both hoses to our local NAPA store, and for like $30 they made me a new hose...took the two hoses, and made me the one I needed...works great...I also took pictures of what I needed, and how I needed it set up (holding the pieces in place, etc)...worked out great for the guy making it...I didn't have to try and describe what I needed...just showed him the pictures...

Not sure where Adna Wa. is, but I had to get my hoses made at Williams Filter/Hose in Tacoma to get all the right fittings. The Napa guys were a joke.

Not all NAPAs are alike. I mean, there are some reps that a really helpful and want to earn your business and some reps treat you like a plague that walked in the door. For the former, tell them that you appreciate their help. For the latter, take it for what it is worth and take your business elsewhere as an indication of the level of expertise that they can or are willing to provide.

For example, the Autozone near me is really good. I've been to others that have high schoolers behind the counter and are mostly clueless unless they can look it up in a catalog.

One time at Pep Boys I asked for wheel bearings for a 74 VW Thing. The kid asked me, "Bearings for a What?". I thought he didn't hear me so I replied, "A 74 Thing". Still puzzled, I had to explain at length what it was and he was glazed over like a donut.

Now that right there is funny.

Unfortunately around here most of the good parts guys are not at the better parts houses. But, we make due...

Our Advanced Auto is awesome...the guys (and one girl) are super knowledgeable, and are more than willing to get their hands dirty if needed...there is an O'Reileys going up right beside it, should be interesting.

This past Wednesday, I stopped at an AutoZone, I was having some issue with the sock on the sending unit picking up some trash, I asked the guy behind the counter if he was knowledgeable about older vehicles, he replied yes, so I relayed my information of what was going on to him, his "solution" was for me to buy a electric fuel pump, and bypass the new mechanical one...I asked how that would help with the sending unit inside the tank, his reply was, not really sure, but that was one of the options in the computer under fuel issues...
